Chris - That's fine if those vehicles are not for you... I'm not a big fan of "muscle trucks" either for that matter. I brought them up only to show how ridiculous it is to say "performance is dead at GM".

Congrats on the IROC

Again, the common thought behind the scenes seems to be 2006 as a 2007, so no one should be surprised.

It is kind of dangerous to read between the lines on what was said in an interview. There isnt time to rehearse an answer or intentionally imply something in a statement. If it was some sort of press release, then you could probably look for hidden meanings. Only time will tell.

You bring up a good point, bsmith. The interview was conducted via phone after our initial face-to-face photo session at Milan. At the time, Mark was on his cell phone and he seemed to be heading home in his car after work (around 6 pm). As the interview proceeded, he arrived at what I assume was his house and he became increasingly distracted right around the time I asked him the hardball question about the import market (presumably he suddenly found himself late for dinner!). I got the impression he was inside his home garage because he started to nervously bang on something in a medium-size room with a concrete floor.

Much of the interview had to be edited to remove false starts and "uhhs" and "ahhs," so yes, I would agree it's not a good idea to read too much between the lines. This was an off-the-cuff deal, nothing was pre-arranged except the time and date. He's just a hard working gearhead who has probably too many masters to serve. I hope he succeeds, but GMPD really can't afford any more "performance" fiascos like SSR and Silverado SS. There is a pent-up demand for a truly affordable RWD performance car and if GM doesn't fill it, someone else surely will.

From what I think, the Camaro will be back 2006 as a 2007 model 40aniv.
But I really hope to see some concept at the Detroit auto show or Chicago

How pathetic things have gotten for us...that we must hang on every syllable of every word by every GM employee....hoping to cryptically find some hope.

Well, I will graduate college in June 2006 and should have a real job and have money to buy a new car in time for the 2007 model year and I sure hope that the car I buy is a Camaro.

Z284ever - things aren't pathetic for all of us... I for one am not doting on every word uttered by a GM official. I'm happy with my 02 TA; I'm confident the 2004 GTO will be a good substitute if I need a new car soon; and I have faith GM will bring the Camaro back, if for no other reason than simple marketplace forces.

Johnny - thanks for posting, it puts the interview in context.

How right you are! A GTO will make an excellent substitute. As will a Mustang, G35 Coupe......and if we are to believe GM...even an SUV.

But if you are not looking for a substitite...and will only accept the real thing, (as in new Camaro)...things are less cheery.

Agreed. I think it would look bad on gm if they went through all this hoopla about killing the camaro, and then announced a new one while some of the old ones are still on the sales lots. I wouldn't expect anything official any time soon.

Hey Johnny, thanks for managing to fit my question in there,it means a lot to me. If things go as planned I could be working under Mark in the next five years or so. If not, are you guys hiring?
