GM fired so many people with company cars that they warned taxi companies beforehand

If someone isn't cutting it in management, they're often "sidemoted" into a job with less responsibility but usually without loss in pay. At least that's how I've seen it done in larger organization. So I wouldn't be surprised if there was a fair amount of dead weight at various management levels at GM.

Wow these storys are so off base.
First, workers that were let go were done so in a very "soft" way (I guess you could put it).
They were all allowed to keep company vehicles for up to 30 days while they made arrangements.
Furthermore, they were all given 1 months salary for every year with the company up to 15 years.
They were also all given full health benefits that will last the same amount of time (up to 15 months).
Furthermore, the company is going to assist them in worker placement programs to help them find new jobs, no matter how long that takes.
Not to mention, C&G is reporting the next round is set for this Monday. April 3rd.

If these reductions are done the right way (i.e. targeted), maybe this is a good way to trim the deadweight and underperformers.

All in all, doesn't seem to be a bad severence package at all.

If you've worked there 12 years: you get a year's pay, a car for 30 days, free health benefits for a year, and a job placement program until you land a new job.
I find it next to impossible to believe that GM would lay off people, and send them home in taxis. That's an 80s style layoff which is reserved for firings today.
GM NEEDS to cut personnel. Assembly line workers are a fraction of what they once were, and there's still enough managers at GM to block progress and speed of bringing out new vehicles. Seemingly everyone here who's been around some time has noted how bloated and bureaucratic GM's management and white collar positions are.
Hopefully, GM won't make the same mistake Ford seems to have made. Apparently, they tossed out alot of experienced engineers with the expectation that they would instead the work of engineers from Mazda & Volvo into their US line, and pull in SVT specific people and incorperate them into a general Ford Performance Vehicle line that elminated SVT and Ford's ability to quickly do it's own cars here.
Re: GM fired so many people with company cars that they warned taxi companies beforehand
Those who had company vehicles for the most part were allowed to keep them for 30 days. Those who did not have a company car were given transportation in a "Metro Car" -- a local livery company in Metro Detroit....they drive Black DTS and Town Cars.
There is never an easy way to let people go.
....and anyone today who thinks they're safe from something like this is either:
A. Self employed
B. In Denial
C. Not paying attention.
