At most, Hummer sells 40,000 vehicles a year (that's H1 and H2 combined), so their slice of the fuel and pollution pie is probably less than the Toyota Camry!

 

I bet ya the start up guy for the site was once intimidated by a Hummer... Hence his resort to find some comfort from fellow intimidated brethren, whom he found hiding away in chat rooms.

Honestly, I don't know whether to be serious or to laugh about the site. How many times those people bring in fuel economy? Every single time. Yet so many of them are ignorant and lack any sort of automotive knowledge to realize that Hummer is a specialty vehicle that weights some 10,000 lbs. Its fuel economy actually, considering the weight, is far from horrible - it's fine.

Perhaps I should just roll the eyes
and not get upset over the whole thing.

You know, this gives me an idea for all those Tree hugging, hybrid-driving peoples, boys and girls. We should make websites exploiting the dangers of having thousands of volts stored in their vehicles. Just think of the children! Think of the squirrels that crawl under the car. Think of the rigorous training the technicians have to undergo. Think of potential hazards when they spill their coffee... This just might give me some sort of crazy satisfaction.

 

Funny thing is...the mid sized sedan with the best fuel economy is the Impala 3.4L with the SAME 50's tecnology....

The problem is that for some insane reason people think they need to drive these cars to be cool. And then the manufacturers only make these cars cool. Not helping keep the oil reserves stocked and the atmosophere clean (I'm aware of the massive industrial pollution but there's no reason the automotive industry has to try to match it). We don't *have* to all drive hybrids if people and manufacturers were more reasonable, and after acquiring a few countries' worth of oil recently.

The eventual popularization of the hybrid or fuel cell car still need not spell the end of fuel-burning performance cars, too. They may run off of CNG or LNG in the future, but haven't there been a couple concept engines with promising performance that run on that stuff?

 

They are right about something on the pie chart tho.
It is the amount of off-roading that will be done with the comercial versions of the HMMWV (Hightly Mobile Multi-Wheeled Vehicle). I have had the occasion to drive many of the military versions in places that most would not dream of driving and they are a very capable vehicle. I remember the second day I had my new truck (4wd 2000 Silverado) I took it our to the muddest nastest place I could find. The only thing that wasnt brown with mud was the area scraped off by the wipers. I parked it between a Jeep Wrangler off road package and a ZR2, when the owners saw what I had done the night before they couldn't belive it. Their reply to my answer as why I would do something like that was that they would never even think about going down a dirt road if they didnt have to.

 

I think the guy's an idiot, and I told him so.

Hummers sell less than 40,000 units per year, yet he's singling them out despite the fact that there are over a million other SUVs sold that get equal or worse mileage (Tahoes, Navigators, and Suburbans for starters actually have worse city mileage than an H2: 12 vs 13!).

I bet he's one of those people who went after Ford for producing those 25-30,000 Excursions, but didn't have the guts to complain about the 1.2 million other big trucks and SUVs that people were actually buying.

I'm not a large SUV fan by any measure, but for him (and the Sierra Club in general) to go after these marginally produced vehicles while ignoring the huge SUV that people are actually buying just to have something big I feel shows that group as a fraud.

That having been said, I love Hummers.

 

What car or truck weighed 8,000 lbs inthe 50's?

 

THe article kind of implys that they all did, even though I know this is not the case.

I bet the same size vehicle in the 50's gets half the gas milage as a Hummer H2

 

If you get a response, please let us know... sometimes hearing these people's reasoning for bad choices is even more entertaining than the article itself!

 

Once again, Brandon - the Impala is classified as a large car and does indeed have the best economy in that class, but it does not by any means own the mid-size class (which is filled with its real competition). Go hit www.fueleconomy.gov instead of just passing around misinformation.

While I think that this website overexaggerates things too far and by doing so obscures the point, there is some truth to it - primarly that people are using this thing as a fashion statement, just like a nipple ring. Oh well, it should be nice when the resale values on H2s drop like a rock and people can pick one up cheaply enough to use it as intended.

 

I fired off an email saying the same thing. I used registered EPA data and some sales charts. They are barking up the wrong tree attacking the H2 only. But they don't have the guts to take a swing at all the large SUV's out there because we'd probably find out many tree-huggers and Sierra Club members drive those kinds of vehicles themselves. I said go after real polluters like industrial corps.

 

Its a "parody site" from the Sierra club. They picked the H2 cause its an easy high visability target.

Perhaps, it would make someone that doesn't really need a H2 think twice about getting one - good for the enviornment, bad for GM (well, unless they buy another GM vehicle, like a car?)

I don't get riled up anymore when I read those.. They do make some valid points, but anybody with half a brain would recognize a bunch of their arguments are obviously heavily pro-environment biased and don't "tell the whole story."
