I thought GM got alot of proprietary manufacturing methods out of the Daewoo deal. It was supposed to help GM shore up their manufacturing tolerances. From what I've read, GM has made some good progress in this department.

Daewoo was a great deal for GM...and magnificently structured.

Yeah, I guess it sometimes is less expensive for them to buy the know-how (with all their underlying debt, of course) than try to do it yourself. ***shrug***

Did buying Daewoo have something to do with wanting to expand in China?

At the rate China's automarket is growing, I'd say now is a good time to buy GM stock. Right now GM's market share in China is also growing.

Bought Daewoo because it was a steal. They got it for something like $250 Million with all its platforms manufacturing facitilies and market share, albeit small. It costs something like that $250 mil to develop a small car platform and GM got a whole company with like 3 different platforms for the same price, basically it was the best recent move by GM.

Sounds to me like Italian mafia got GM to do its bidding.

How about Chapter 11?
GM has far too much cash and liquid assets to be even close to Chapter 11. With Devine and Wagoner at the helm, I wouldn't expect a repeat of their early-90s crisis anytime soon. And I'm sure they'll deal with Fiat appropriately. You might occasionally question GM's engineering or marketing, but they undoubtedly have a first-rate legal team. It'd sure be nice to see Harry Pearce in action again, though.
