Thumbs up GM to begin rollout of Displacement On Demand.

I think this is a GREAT way to get the best of both worlds!

Big engine performance with small engine fuel economy!

Full Size trucks and new Malibu are the first....

I like this quote...

He said, "If you can get better fuel economy with a pushrod engine compared to a double-overhead-cam four-valve engine, then you have done something wrong if you build the double-overhead four-valve. If you implement more expensive technologies where there is no benefit, you shouldn't do it because you are losing money."

The GM Live webcast is pretty interesting. This will end all the bad mouthing of GM SUVs.

And so what is the displacemet of the new motors being bumped up to?

Are we just going to see the same 4.8, 5.3 and 6.0 with DOD, or are we going to start seeing ~6.0-7.0 liter motors w/ DOD all across the board?

Or in V8 terms, 6.8 litres (~415 ci).

Still, GM nees to realize that certain segments of the market demand high-tech OHC engines, regardless of their marginal benefits.

Another thing I liked in the article is that displacement was really talked up...

DOD makes the V12 and V16 motors we see more realistic... also makes for some big V8's

Will these vehicles come with a free sledge hammer, so you can smash the stupid computer and make the engine run on all cyls at all times, like they're suppose to?

2.0 Eco-tech Saturn Vue--with twin elec motors--
175hp total---with up 50% better gas mileage??

And then theres the SUV and pickups--elec motor and DOD....going to be WAY better gas mileage then Ford F-Series.

GM doesn't seem to worried about possible increases in CAFE

Sounds nice, now if GM could only get the interior of their Silverado and Sierra trucks to at least half of the quality of that of the Tundra, or 3/4 of the quality of the new '04 F150, we'd have a winner!

Why? If it is totally transparant with no disadvantages, why would you be opposed to it?

Are you opposed to ABS because it doesn't allow you to mash the brakes and lock them up all the time?

Why does everyone with a room-temperature IQ have to bring this up in discussions of DOD? That was over twenty years ago. Technology has improved dramatically since then. DOD is not the same as the V8-6-4. Get over it.
