I assume you have Windows 2000 or XP.
1. Go to Control Panel.
2. Go to Administrative Tools.
3. Go to Services.
4. In services, find service called "Messenger".
5. Right-Click, select STOP.
6. Right-Click again, select Properties.
7. Under Startup type simply select DISABLED.
8. Click OK and close everything.

Checkout spyware blaster. You can find a link on the immunize screen on Spybot in the middle of the page in blue. Download that and update it.
Since I've installed the spyware blaster, spybot picks up virtually nil spyware.
I had those grey boxes before.....what a pita....almost as bad as doing the coolent bypass.

I do not have the "mile a minute" pop-ups
, but everytime I open a new internet session I get a least one.My old machine (Windows '98) had the "mad ads disease"
- the dam thing would get pop-ups even when the internet was shutdown. (Work machine - high speed access on all the time thru a network.)They finally wound up redoing the hard drive, and that fixed it, and then like 2 months later - after I got it back the way I wanted it
- I got this new machine w/ Windows XP
and sound.
I guess it all worked out in the end.
Later!
(And, good luck ! )

Mind you the fix that I posted works when the pop ups are not caused by IE. Sometimes you will get different ALERT messages, even when IE is not open. It was for MESSENGER service, a system service that got exploited. This is what the fix was for.
However, Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy are pretty much the only apps you need, just as someone posted, be sure they are updated.
And in order to keep this in 5th gen forum...
has anyone seen this concept? It's awesome!
