Ford shares at 22 year low

Ford Motor Co. U.S. sales were down 12% in 07 compared to 06 and Toyota Motor Corp. passed Ford to take the #2 spot behind GM in U.S. car and truck sales. Ford stock dropped $.32 to $6.13/share at the close of trading on Friday to its lowest price since Jan. 15, 1986, when Ford ended the day at $6.11. Over the past 10 years, the market value of Ford shares has plummeted from $68 billion to $13 billion.

They're dropping quite a bit too, down to 23.65. I think the outlook for GM is much brighter than Ford however. GM's probably a good stock to buy; Ford not so much

GM's 52 week high of $43.20/share was hit in October when the UAW contract talks were wrapped up and it looked like GM got a few concessions out of the UAW. In less than 3 months, the price has dropped almost $20/share to close Friday at $23.65.
GM's U.S. sales for 2007 (3,822,612) were down 6% from 2006 sales in an overall market (16,148,811) that was down 2.4%. GM's U.S. light vehicle market share was 23.7% in 2007.

With the stock down, along with the dollar's value, is there any talk about someone buying them?

I recently read somewhere that the market value (stock price X number of shares outstanding) of GM is down to about $13 billion. I havent heard of anyone wanting to buy them or take them over. GM isnt for sale, so it would have to be a hostile takeover. With the price of fuel rising, people buying less big trucks/SUVs and the new 35mpg CAFE requirements that will begin getting phased in for 2011 coming, many analysts dont see a good profit potential there.

Is this in constant dollar or 2008 dollars.

If it's in constant dollars, Ford's stocks are actually worth far less today at $6.13 than it was when it was at that $6.11 price in 1986.

Thats actual stock price in 1986. If you take into account 22 years of inflation, the value of the 1986 stock in 2008 dollars would be quite a bit more.

Y'know somebody could fix that stock price for Ford if they'd toss a dirty bomb into Ford headquarters.

That's actually quite generous for a company that has a total shareholder equity of negative $41.7 billion:

$1 in 1986 = $2+ in 2008.

Ford is cheap if they can turn things around and make the same profit per vehicle as Honda or Toyota.

If Ford can make the same profit per vehicle as Honda or Toyota, then the Blue Oval would be one of the best car companies in the world - so, yea, I'd hope that their stock price would climb

I have a pretty dim view of Ford's future, but on paper, the company seems to look a bit better than GM:
