They don't advertise it and it doesn't sell, go figure.
It's like Buick, totally directionless.

Buick? Directionless?

What planet have you been on for the past 12 months?

How long have we been wondering why a brand consisting of rebadged Fords is still operating? Seems like it's been a long time coming but still a little sobering to hear. Hopefully Ford picks up Jill Wagner.

Olds. Pontiac. Plymouth. Mercury. Four once-proud and great brands.

Pontiac and Oldsmobile made a lot more sense than Mercury did for the past 20 years.

You guys need to check out the Buick commercials, website and news releases. Buick does everything Cadillac does for less money and with more modern styling. They are GM's answer to Lexus.

The saddest part is no more Jill Wagner commercials....maybe they will replace Mike Rowe with her?

Okay - I Agree that Mercury seems to have no defined place in The 21st century Ford.

However in the past year - since GM dropped Pontiac & Saturn -- I would hardly classify Buick as directionless. In the Opposite is true - Buick's brand has never been more clearly defined - it's basically stepped up to fill the void left by Pontiac & Saturn. Buick is now GM's near luxury import fighter division.

Cadillac is GM's luxury division, GMC is GM's Truck Division, and Chevy is GM's flagship, & performance division.

Pretty bad for a car brand when the loss of beautiful Ms. Wagner is truly the saddest part.

We've seen the writing on the wall. Once a brand looses its own seperate design, engines and image it's days are numbered. Even then Ford only rebadged a few mainstream models for Mercury so they could be sold in Lincoln dealers. Probably the only saving grace for Mercury for the last decade.

Just turn it into a luxury trim line and be done with it, that is basically all the brand has become.

Sounds like "middle market" to me. Do we really all those adjectives?

Hopefully this will let them concentrate on Lincoln. The Ford brand is doing wonderfully, but Lincoln could use some help. Most the Lincolns are just higher trimmed Fords.

Mercury is kind of sad. I really thought it's proper place was in the same niche as Pontiac or Nissan. Something with a little more style, performance, and content than a Ford.

However, because Ford has been on it's deathbed for so long, Mercury's line up is gutted to the point where the amount of money it would take to do it right is too much to stomach. Especially with Lincoln floundering around.

It for you look at everything Mercury has sold a lot of, the market has went in the crapper and taken their volume with it. They were selling 100,000 Cougars a year in the 80's..now personal luxury coupes are dead. The Mountanieer always looked better than the Explorer, but who buys BOF SUV's any more? Grandpa Marquis...well it's customers litterally started to die off.

I personally was hoping for the longest time they would surpise everyone with a new Cougar off the Mustang platform. However since "Cougar" now has other social connotations..the name is dead..haha.
