Ford getting 3.6L Diesel V8 for 2009

http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dl...1/TOC01ARCHIVE

Looks like a good engine for the F-150

"The Range Rover's new diesel engine, developed with PSA/Peugeot-Citroen SA, was launched this year in Europe and looks like an ideal engine for a light-duty truck. The 267-hp V-8 develops 472 pounds-feet of torque - plenty of pulling power for consumers who might use a diesel F-150 to haul small trailers. The British market Range Rover gets 25 mpg.

unless its made by international like the 7.3 (doubt it will be) then its goin to be junk. lol look at the ford engineered 6.0 diesel. a good portion of those 6.0's are junk. its going to b einteresting seeing all these small diesels. gm is going to have a smaller diesel be an option to power the 1500's down the road.

The 6.0L is made by international. Because of it's problem Ford canceled it's contract with them to do a Diesel V6.

Why are they maintaining a V8 format at such small displacement? There must be a reason, but...

I think is has to do with emissions. I remember hearing that smaller bores make for a cleaner, more efficient burn. But I don't know enough to even be considered partly 'engine litterate' so don't take my word for it.

That's certainly a consideration.

The farther the flame front has to travel from the ignition point, the greater the chance of not completely burning the mixture - which is the main cause of all emissions.

Oxygen sensors are put in cars to detect how completely the mixture burns, and are the sensors that "close the loop" in most designs, particularly the LSx's.

Note that the LS1's had 4 of 'em... two in front of the cats, two after... great way to figure out if the cats are doing their job, ain't it?

That is true of gasoline engines, but I don't know about Diesels. Diesels have no spark plugs, they use compression to ignite. Big trucks use some big I6 engines.

The real difference in a diesel would be that the location ignition point can vary. In a gas engine, if it does, it's spark knock.

472 lbs/ft of torque going through stock F-150 axles?

I guess that means the F-250 has been killed off now...

Why not just keep it simple, make an I4 off the 6.X diesel and call it a day?

Ford and International were originally working on a V6 based on the 6.0L. Ford canceled it at the last minute. International even built a whole plant primarily to make the V6. The V6 is now being used in the Ford and International LCF trucks.
