Ford F-150 V6s outselling V8 models

http://www.autoblog.com/2011/06/02/f...ing-v8-models/

Ford hit a milestone with its F-150 pickup last month. According to PickupTrucks.com, the Blue Oval sold more trucks with V6 engines than V8 mills. Forty-one percent of F-150 sales left the lot with the company's 3.5-liter Ecoboost six-pot under the hood. That number is up four percentage points compared to last month.

Additionally, the base, naturally-aspirated 3.7-liter V6 engine took home a 14 percent slice of the total mix, bringing the grand V6 total to 55 percent of all F-150 sales.
Wow, that is amazing. I did not expect that many Ecoboost V6's in the F-150.

I saw that in my morning paper, however mine didn't have the breakdown of ecoboost v. NA. When you also look at the fact that more economy cars were sold as well, its really not surprising that V6 full-size trucks are selling better than V8s.

Note to GM: Perhaps its time for a boosted 3.6L DI V6 in the Silverado and Sierra.

Makes sense, the ecoboost is a better engine than the 5.0 in truck form and better mpg's to boot, win win situation. I just can't get past the ugly ford exterior on the F150. Ram looks like pure sex next to it. My buddy has an 09 F150 and you can't reach anything over the damn sides of it if you aren't 6'6" or taller.

Or how about at least just replacing that 4.3L with the DI 3.6L. The 3.6L teamed with a 6 speed auto should be enough to power any 2WD Silverado or Tahoe.

How about they fix the problems with the 3.6L before they put it in their cash cow Silverado??

What problems are you referring to?

This really comes as no surprise to me.

I've said for years now that the company that learns how to give the consumer the largest car with the most efficiency will own the market.

Hmm...I think that has been what everyone at the big 3 has been trying to do since the 50's...

No surprise.

I've been driving a 5.3 Z71 Silverado since February (son has the B4C in Phoenix) and it has plenty of power not only for everyday use but to power up the mountains like nobody's business (went to Tahoe weekend before last).

If the new Ecoboost F150 puts out more power than that and gets more than the 16mpg I'm averaging, then of course it's going to sell like hotcakes.

Re: Ford F-150 V6s outselling V8 models

To me it'd be the obvious choice for an engine if I were buying an F-150. The only reason I'm a little surprised that it's been the obvious choice for so many other people is that so many truck buyers are traditionalists and traditional trucks have V8s, not V6s and especially not turbocharged engines.

To be honest I'd definitely be a little scared of having a turbocharged 6 cylinder in a daily work truck... but Ford is really staking their reputation on this ecoboost configuration in their vehicles so obviously they believe it will be nearly as durable as a N/A engine.

You wouldn't be saying that if you drove a Hemi Ram back-to-back with it I find the 5.3 to be rather gutless, personally.

Regardless, bravo to Ford. Glad to see this idea is gaining steam, but it makes me concerned for my own Hemi Ram customers. On a side note, I've been taking in more Ford and GM trucks lately than normal, primarily due to styling. The stigma of Chrysler croaking has declined dramatically, so it seems...

I would love a 3.5L Eco-Boost in a truck like our Ranger XLT 4x4.

Re: Ford F-150 V6s outselling V8 models

This reminds me... when is the ecoboost coming to the Mustang? I wonder if Ford will be able to convince the world that a turbo 6 is a suitable replacement for a V8 in a classic American muscle car?

I guess if they can do it with truck buyers they can do it with anyone.

I also wonder if we might see an ecoboost 8 in the future to replace the top engine options in the F-150 Raptor and Mustang GT500

Ram is a pretty nice looking and running truck, Chevy needs to step it up and let the 6.2 go into more than just crew cabs. Exterior of the Ram is really nice looking especially the rear with the dual exhausts melted into the bumper. If I didn't have the Dakota paid for and needed a new truck I'd be all over teh Ram Sport RT.

Come drive my 350,000 miles 1985 Ram 2500 4x4. 318 2bbl, 4speed, 140 horses of blazing power. Not a realistic comparison, but it is amazing how perceptions of how much power we need has become. It is not fast, but its not like it is a danger on the roads. Nice part is that at 4 ways stops, it is always my turn. Nobody wants to go ahead of me. Makes trips to Lowe's like a champ.
