Ford EcoBoost = 80HP and +2mpg

http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dl...619046279/1065

The 2009 Lincoln MKS will be the first Ford Motor Co. vehicle that uses a new performance and fuel economy boosting technology that features gasoline direct injection and two turbochargers. Ford calls the system EcoBoost and claims it will deliver up to 20 percent better fuel economy.

Derrick Kuzak, Ford's group vice president of Global Product Development, says Ford will use EcoBoost on as many as 500,000 vehicles within the next five years.

The 2009 MKS will be available with an optional 3.5-liter V-6 EcoBoost engine that develops 340-horsepower. It will be an all-wheel drive sedan. Ford says fuel economy is improved by 2 mpg in the MKS with EcoBoost, while emissions are down 15 percent. Performance is about the same as a car with a 4.6-liter V-8. Ford expects higher fuel ecocnomy gains in vehicles that use smaller engines, such as the Focus.

Automakers are revamping their powertrain and future product plans to comply with stricter fuel economy regulations that require an automaker's fleet to average 35 mpg by 2020.

"EcoBoost is meaningful because it can be applied across a wide variety of engine types in a range of vehicles, from small cars to large trucks," Kuzak said.

Ford has not said how much EcoBoost will cost consumers. But the technology is cutting edge, and it isn't cheap. The direct injection system sprays gasoline directly into each cylinder. To work with the turbocharger, direct injection requires a greater number of sensors, more software and a faster computer than a conventional engine.

The payback, however, could come quicker for consumers than if they bought a hybrid or a diesel. Kuzak said a diesel engine takes seven years to pay for itself, while a hybrid requires 12 years. The EcoBoost system should pay for itself in 30 months, he said.

Ford also plans to use EcoBoost on four cylinder engines. When used with a four-cylinder engine, EcoBoost will use only one turbocharger, said spokesman Said Deep. He said the 2009 MKS with EcoBoost will not be at the North American Internation Auto Show in Detroit, but a concept vehicle called the Explorer America, will have the system.

Another way Ford plans to boost fuel economy is by reducing weight. During a December Detroit auto show preview event with reporters, Kuzak said Ford's goal is reduce the weight of its vehicles between 250 and 750 pounds. He didn't say how Ford accomplish its goal or when the weight reductions would start.
Sounds like an impressive powertrain. Who doesn't like more power and better mileage

I'm confused. Is this just a clever name for a twin-turbo direct injected setup? And, it only improves mileage because, at that HP level, they'd normally require a 5.4l V8 or something?

No the 340HP EcoBoost 3.5L gets 2mpg more in the MKS than a regular ~260HP 3.5L (or 3.7L?) MKS.

It is also good to hear that Ford is serious about weight reduction.

it says right in that article that the gas milage is improved over a 4.6l v8, and as of right now there is no mks, only mkz and mkx. the mks is a replacement for the town car which has a 4.6 v8

No it doesn't, here is the quote from the article. Also the MKS is the replacement for the Lincoln LS not the Town Car.

The base V6 in the MKS is the 3.7L version of the 3.5L in the MKZ.

Performance is about the same as a car with a 4.6-liter V-8.
The 4.6L they are talking about is the 3v the Mustang uses. Town cars 2v 4.6L is a dog with no where near the performance of a 340HP Turbo V6.

I think you are going to see a lot of turbocharged/DI vehicles in the future.

Bosch sees this combination as the way to get diesel-like fuel economy at a lower cost, so I'd definitely agree with your statement. I'm all for it!

I don't see how this will give diesel like fuel economy. It appears that the MKS Ecoboost will get 17 or 18 mpg in the city, compared to 15 mpg for the Town Car. It appears that a Taurus with the 2.0L Ecoboost would get around 23 mpg in the city compared to 18 with the Taurus 3.5L. This is an improvement, but far from diesel levels. I could see Ford developing a 1.3L Ecoboost to replace the 2.0L in the Focus and a 1.6L to replace the 2.3L in the Fusion.

Our SC Ion gets an average of 26mpg and does low 14 second 1/4 mile times. Its not a bad combination.

Where did you get those numbers from? The only ones I've seen say the Fusion with a 1.6L EcoBoost engine gets 30 city 40 hwy.

I hope insurance companies stop automatically raising your rates if your car is the "turbo" version then. Cause if everything has a turbo, we're humped for insurance in this country.
