Ford backtracking on the Ka... may bring it to the US afterall.

While GM decides not to sell the Chevrolet Orlando here simply because there's nothing here like it, Ford is reconsidering and will likely sell the Ford Ka here in the US if not actually make the thing here.

Ford CEO says company assessing tiny car for U.S. market
Associated Press

DETROIT -- Ford Chief Executive Alan Mulally says increased demand for small cars has led the automaker to revisit its decision not to bring the tiny European Ka model to the United States.

Mulally said on Detroit radio station WJR's "Paul W. Smith Show" Monday that Ford is assessing the Ka now, and that a lot of people share the opinion that Ford Motor Co. should bring it to the U.S.

A new version of the Ka was unveiled last week at the Paris Motor Show. It will be launched in major European markets by late this year or early 2009.

The Ka is far smaller than the Focus, which currently is Dearborn-based Ford's only U.S. compact car. Focus sales are up 24 percent through September.

Mulally seems to understand and 'get it' better than all of GM management.

If you had to spell it like Boston residents say it, it'd be "Kah". There's always an "H" in place of an "R".

Comparing apples and oranges. This thing is like an Aveo. Orlando is like a mini minivan.

This is a whole class size smaller than the Aveo (which will get dominated by the Fiesta.)

Which sounds like the Mazda5. Chevy should make the Orlando. Anything that provides compact size, fuel economy, and some measure of utility (can hold stuff) sounds like a good match for the market.
