First impressions on the Commodore & Caprice
I'm seeing the same too...in fact, I was following an Impala LTZ on the way to work today, and actually thought the paint, stainless bar at the back and the overall look was quite "upmarket". Add in the wheel arches of the commodore, it would be visually stimulating (like looking at the Acura TL or a BMW).
Yes, the rear, the door handles, and quite a few other things.
When these things were drawn up the idea was to also make these things here in the US.

They will soon be sold in the Middle East as Chevy Caprices.
In short, the similarities shouldn't be surprizing. Now knowing a small part of the history behind the designs, you probally aren't either.

Lutz won.
The new Impala that might have been a US made Holden Chevrolet Caprice is going to have much different sheetmetal.
Holden's site has some pretty good pics:

Impalas and Caprices sharing styling cues? Now there's a fresh idea.
I honestly don't see a problem with it myself. I love the current Impala and as my wife said she'd like to replace our SUV with a sedan and a truck someday, there might be room for a Caprice-like vehicle in my future. That or a new Malibu.
