Fiero's on display at GM Tech Center
Fiero's on display at GM Tech Center
This is kind of a suprise, 7 or 8 of the cars were put on display a little over a week ago. GM even allowed the Michigan fiero club to come in and take pictures, something which normally isnt allowed from what I hear. There are some nice pictures at the link below including many of the 90 prototype. There is even a picture of the silver 2+2 fiero there.

Re: Fiero's on display at GM Tech Center
I really like the Fiero. It was a nice little car plagued by GM's 80's mentality (cut corners and worry about durability later) that turned out nearly great at the end. As soon as GM got it near perfect (all it needed was more power) it killed it.
I actually test drove one (a V6 Formula 4 speed) before I got my hands on a year old special service Mustang back in '86.
BTW: Did you know that just about any GM FWD drivetrain will fit in there, up to and including a Caddy Northstar? There was someone at Naval Station San Diego who stuck a Chevy 350 in one.

Remember: I grew up across the big pond, so we didn't have too many Fiero's over there.
Once I started to hear and read about all the problems people were having with them, I got kinda turned off...
Too bad... Otherwise I might have even bought one at some point...

I still really doubt they'll bring back the name.
The majority of car customers hear Fiero and they think EXPLODO. May not be true but that's how it is. It's not a name that has a whole lot of good recognition with it. it has a niche fan base but most consumers just think it's a ball of fire.
If GM brought out a new mid engined coupe I say they should call it something else.

Re: Fiero's on display at GM Tech Center
I've owned three Fieros ('86 GT, '88 Formula and an '88 GT) and still think the GT (1986.5 - 1988) is the best looking car to ever come out of a GM studio - hands down.
The '88 cars were superior because of the suspension changes, but it was still woefully underpowered and still pretty lacking in terms of refinement. The 2.8 just wasn't up to task of hauling arond such a heavy car. I've never driven a V8 powered Fiero, but did take a spin in one that had a 3800 supercharged motor in it. Made the car a lot more fun.
It's funny to me how fanatical Fiero guys are (and I count myself amongst them) to this day.
GM will never bring back the Fiero name because of the bad rep the cars had. But you have to admit, Hulki Aldikatchi and his team were definitely pushing the engineering and design envelopes with that little car, given that they had virtually nothing to work with.
People keep mentioning the Solstice in the same vein as the Fiero -- mostly that it was assembled with off the shelf GM parts. However, I don't think the Solstice will evoke the same kind of passion the Fiero did.

I'm glad GM acknowledged its fans.
