External combustion engines?

http://greenlivingideas.com/topics/a...m-speed-record

Seems interesting. Could work well for a series hybrid like the Volt.

Why not use the proven gas turbine technology for a Volt engine?

This engine may have better thermal efficiency. Also having no cooling system would be a good weight saver.

Interesting idea. Do turbine engines require special fuels?

It sounds like future generations of the Volt could be offered with other options for the engine: diesel, CNG, LPG, fuel cell, etc. I wouldn't hold my breath on gas turbine though, just because I don't think GM has much, if any experience. I think fuel cell would be pretty cool. Silent in charge depleting mode, and pretty silent in charge sustaining mode too!

Did they have any turbine cars that actually were driven around and used as cars? I have no clue; these are well before my time...

I do know that the fuel cells have extensive real world testing with their Equinox fleet, and GM already offers production CNG and LPG vehicles in other markets.

I must say I'm impressed that the Firebird III could get ~20MPG out of what was probably similar to a jet engine. Wonder what they could do with one today...
