As PP so eloquently explained, you're the reason these threads turn to crap.

ProudPony....we're just going to have to disagree again I suppose. And I hate to do it, but I have to agree that the Ford GT was something very, very special, and it is news when something goes wrong like that.

BTW...as I hope you know, I'm certainly not an import leg-humper. In fact, I just went out and paid too much money for my brand new 2005 FXDWG. Why? Because its a Harley, and there is simply nothing else like it - no matter where it is made, and certainly not from Japan.

Probably be too cold to ride it to Detroit in January for the NAIAS, huh?

In some strange way, I do feel that I (and others) owe Doug a small apology for hijacking his original thread and topic, and turning it into some shoot-fest between Corvette recalls and Toyota.
Sorry Doug - your point was made, and well-taken. I think you know my position on things of this nature - hence my long post about the ongoing troubles with another import company that has gone on for 3-4 years, affects millions of cars, has already resulted in death and injury, yet nobody knows anything about it, and the news doesn't seem to care about it either. But that wouldn't be media bias - it's probably a by-product of Six-Sigma manufacturing technique and superior engineering capability.
Agreed.

No problem!

My opinion is that designs that put flammable materials in close proximity to a catalytic converter in a multi-passenger vehicle are just as newsworthy - especially in vehicles intended for public sale in mass volumes.

And my new push mower has a Briggs-Stratton on it as opposed to a Honda!

I have no problem accepting someone else's POV Bob, honest I don't.
But in all seriousness, I (personally) don't think the cost of a vehicle should detrmine how "newsworty" a potential failure might be.
To me, a Yugo with a similar suspension component problem should be JUST as deserving of coverage.

It's all good.
Let's move on, whaddayasay?

My point was this was a serious safety issue.....no-one would have gave a damn if it was recalled because the mirrors were falling off...

But a defect that would cause an unsuspecting fire (imagine being caught in the hurricance evacuations with a hundred cars around you and suddenly your minivan catches fire.......should have been front page news.

We've beat this dead horse to a dusty pulp, so on to the next issue please

who cares if a Mazda has a recall? They ain't the top of the charts in reliability anyways, and I don't think they ever were.

Re: Exhaust system-related fires prompt Mazda to recall, halt production of Mazda5

As an update, to anyone who cares, the cause wasn't exactly idling for 2 hrs as originally reported. It was more along the lines of people accidentally leaving the trans in the "autostick" mode and driving down the highway at extreamly high rpm for extended amounts of time. Like going 70+ in second.

I can't see how people wouldn't notice their car was spinning at 6-7k rpms, unless they are that smooth??? So, now that Mazda has gotten all this negative (well, some) press on this issue, it ends up being operator error. Leave the thing in D next time, ok? Some people must be really dense.

As a side note we are getting a LOT of rx8s in for crank/no starts, and it's not even cold out yet.

this forum is a trip

alright, maybe now we should stop the presses -- quick! print in 72 point font on the front of the new york times that a mazda van might catch on fire if you go driving down the road at 7k rpm for extended periods of time.

damned media bias

You know, you are on the border of trolling. A bunch of guys expressed their opinions and put a little thought and effort into responses, and yet your comments contribute virtually nothing to the substance of the thread, other than to continue turning it into crap.

Some people just feel the need to get in the last word....even though they've been shown to be ignorant of the point of the thread....
