Everybody wants a piece of the Mini.

So, some of you schmoes still don't like the Mini...huh?

It seems to have gotten the big three's attention though. Chevy has expressed interest in competing with Mini with a new Nomad.
Now DC and Ford want a piece of the Mini Cooper pie....

Aren't Mini's sales already declining?
Retro is so strong to start and and an embaressment at finish.

Aren't most car sales declining??? When they introduced it, demand was higher than they had anticipated. Get off the anti-retro soap box. The mini is still selling at higher numbers than BMW thought it would. Quite frankly, it's doing well for what I consider to be a niche vehicle.

I would have to think it would be more in the concept of the Mini itself and not its design theme . Hehe , Ive never liked small cars at all , but the mini is a pretty cool car ...imo neways .

What the hell was that?

That's not very nice.:blah:

I've never been on a "Soap box" about that sort of thing - it was only a statement reflecting the recent past.
I don't feel strongly one way or the other about retro designs.

You apparently do though.

I'm not hating It's just there's so much anti-retro on this board that any comment about it is usually negative, even if the person doesn't know why. I got $20 that says if GM came out with a "retro" Camaro that the Camaro worshippers on this board would line up with cash on their hands claiming it was the best Camaro ever built. But I guess we won't know until the Camaro comes back from it's very long vacation. I think a retro or even 4th genish Camaro would be fine. I don't care either way. Let's just hope it doesn't have four doors

Its been all but confirmed that the 5th gen Camaro or "Camaro-like replacement" will not have a retro design.

Some would but I think the people who are against the retro thing, myself included, would not ante up for a 5th gen like that. I don't want a retro 5th gen period and I would not buy one. I know you think that people are saying they hate retro just because it is a Ford or Mustang but this is not the case.

ATTENTION:

THE MINI IS NOT RETRO .

The Mini was produced CONTINUOUSLY until it was REPLACED with a NEW MINI that looks a lot like the old (kinda like when honda designs a new accord, it looks a lot like the old one). The production gap was only a few months.

Okay, so they didn't sell them here for over 30 years... but they sold in such small numbers that almost no one knew what they were, anyway.

Still, if you said that were enough reason to call it retro, how could the same car be Retro in the US and not in Europe?

Minis are cool as hell, are still selling very well and unlike VW, and DCX, BMW isn't going to let the excitement die down before they do anything else... the Convertible Mini is due next summer...

- Mini Fun Fact: On weekends, the plant is run, except not by the normal workforce. Those Minis are assembled by housewives and students working part time (So I guess don't buy one made on a weekend!).

I didn't know that.

I guess for that matter - the new VW Bug isn't retro either.
The last Beetle plant in Mexico got shut down late last year.
Other than a few safety changes over the years - it was essentially pumping out the model year of 79 Beetle for the last 24 years.

Interesting.......

You could make an arguement for the VW Beetle based on the fact that it sold here in huge numbers (millions), was hugely popular, and was then discontinued for 20 years. The New Beetle was concieved for the US market - not the others in which the old Beetle was still being sold, though some are sold in thouse countries.

The new Minis were designed primarily for Europe, where the originals were still being sold. The Bulk of Minis are sold there, with only about 20,000 or so coming over here each year.

It seems as though some have a "Zero Tolerance Policy" for "Retro", but like other Zero Tolerance Policies, it can't always explain everything in smple cut and dry rules.
