Evan Smith goes 12.25 in the GT500.
Re: Evan Smith goes 12.25 in the GT500.
Now all they need to do is get the Evan Smith option available from the factory.
I assume it was confirmed that they didn't enhance this car in any way before he drove it? That is a huge improvement in times - even for the "god" of drivers himself. Seems like Ford might have been thinking "crap crap crap crap crap... the performance community is laughing at us for having 500 ponies and still not being able to take out a regular C6... we need to spice this car up a tad so when Evan runs it - it rallies the troops".
Now all the GT500 guys are gonna go around saying "yeah, these things run low 12s all day long"...

That last Cobra was getting very high 12's if I remember right.

Quote from the article (takes a while to get over here):
One other note: This was done at Milan in Michigan vice MM&FF's normal sea level venue at Englishtown, NJ.
I still say someone will run 11.9x in "mineshaft" conditions this fall/winter. Though I will also still say it is way overweight.
...a 12.257 at 117.18 (2.11 60 ft), with him pedaling it like John Force in second. He also shifted into fourth on this run.

These Stangers sound less than impressed....but they do have some good points. Compared to the SN95 Cobra, this version
-Has 110 more horsepower
-Has more displacement
-Has a 3-year advantage in R&D
-Has a stick axle
Yet Evan Smith's time is only marginally better.
Oink.
Oink.
Oink.
By the way, they are saying that ES actually ran the car in very favorable conditions. Still, there's no doubt it's an 11-second car in the hands of an average driver with a pulley and with a proper tune.....

2. Evan Smith Drove the '03 at an east coast track which is way better.
3. Evan Smith did many tricks to the '03 including removing the front sway bar to get it to run the times that it did. I don't know if he did that to this car because I have not read the article, but bone stock the '03 Cobra did not run that 12.43.
4. The car is a hit on a hit platform, Ford did all of the right moves even if everyone hates the weight penalty, and they will sell quickly.
5. It is still the fastest factory Mustang ever produced.
Re: Evan Smith goes 12.25 in the GT500.
2.11 60'.....with Evan Smith....
More evidence that the car is way way to friggin heavy. Sticky tires will help, but I wonder what the weakest point in the drivetrain is. We will start hearing about breakage pretty soon I think. It takes some seriously strong axels, tranny, ect to dead hook a 4100lb car. Esp with a stick shift

Milan is a crappy track. Not as bad as Lapeer though.

You guys crack me up
YES, The car is heavy... GET OVER IT. The damn thing runs low 12s out of the box with a good driver. Think about how mean these things are going to be when someone slaps on some drag radials, a pulley and gets a tune
Give Ford some friggin' well deserved credit.

Anyways, I agree with Bob. Someone is going to make a perfect run, at a fast track, on a 37 degree day and hit 11.9's stock.

I think we've all seen the motor in a box (aka 4th gens). When a carmaker can honestly add power, keep the weight down, and make it still be able to handle decently, I will be impressed. (C6)
For all Ford did, they could've done better. JMHO though.

I'll give Ford the credit for having the cajones to drop such a monster motor into the Mustang, but I am left unimpressed with the engineering behind the GT500. Quite honestly, the '03-'04 Cobra was a more impressive piece....even though it's a few ticks slower....
