This is Edmunds take on the soon-to-be Pontiac G8. I found their straight line testing very interesting, because the numbers are pretty awesome. Keep in mind that they consistantly get less out of cars than the likes of Car and Driver. For comparison, their test of the 2004 GTO returned a 5.5 second 14 second quarter mile, and that was with the shifter on the right side.

Drag racing dreams aside, this car looks to be everything the GTO was, along with everything it was not. It'll be a terrific addition to the Pontiac showroom. I just hope GM surrounds it with a worthy showroom - namely an udpated G6. As we've discussed in another thred here, Pontiac can't survive on one limited volume barnstormer.

"The Aussie L98 motor's lack of cylinder deactivation is the only significant mechanical difference from the L76 V8 we'll get in the 2008 Pontiac G8. With 6.0 liters of displacement, this pushrod V8 cranks out 362 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque"

I'm assuming that the HP/TQ numbers will be higher here for the 6.0L?

they werent in the car shown at the 07 chicago auto show

if the reviews of the G8 are half that good, that'll be great for Pontiac and GM...

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Pontiac will up the numbers at the last minute just as they did with the Grand Prix GXP (advertised at 290, then upped to 303 before release).

If they don't do GTO, this just may do it for me. I'll still want an 05+ GTO sometime in my future, though, I love the car.

What kind of real world mileage are people netting in the Commodore SS from down under?

If there's no real penalty, this might be my next machine, has some performance, can haul the kiddos, and can accommodate a business associate or client without saying, "Hey I wish I was still in high school!"

Keeps getting better and better... It seems like it should do well, atleast I know it should compete with the Chargers and possibly the 300s around here. My area is just ****ty for cars.

Highway at 110kph I do about 9L/100km. In the city it drinks pretty hard but I still haven't learnt to control my right foot, its just to much fun So far I have let the cars trip computer just run and it has worked out an average of 12.1L/100km over nearly 8000km. This includes approx. 80% highway, 19% city and 1% my pants are on fire.

My average was 11.2 but the 'pants on fire' bit jumped it 1l/100km

Oh, and its an auto (6L80e).

110 KPH = 68.35083 MPH

100 KPH = 62.13712 MPH

1 gallon = 3.785412 litres

I will let you do the math from there

P.S You guys heard of the metric system...you know its all base 10. lol

Not until the GXP model is released with the LS3 engine. The good thing about the L76 6.0L V8 is that it makes 362 HP and 391 ft/lbs of torque while running on regular gas. It also has displacement on demand. So until the GXP is realeased, an 05+ GTO will still have the power advantage.

I think he meant +1 litre. I.e instead of 11.1 it went up to 12.1.

Not bad. With cylinder deactivation it should do well in the city. The six gears helps a lot. Our GTO always felt like it was begging for another gear on the highway.
