THe Bonneville GXP is the Cheapest NEW car from GM you can get with a DOHC V8, $31K after rebate. Or you can get lots of used late 90's Caddys for under/around $20K
Try finding a 4.0 DOHC engine in the Olds Auraura (sp?). Its a mini northstar. As far as GM making DOHC V8's, I dont see that happening outside of Caddy or Buick. GM does have DOHC V6's and I-4's.

Used Auroras are reasonably priced, unless you want to grab a used Northstar Cadillac. Both have been out about 10 years, so they should be pretty cheap.
Large-displacement V8s really want to be OHV cam-in-block. Consider the Ford DOHC 4.6 mod motor and GM did the LS1 V8. The OHV LS1 is smaller, lighter, has a much lower c.g., allows for a much lower hoodline, makes more power, and (I'd bet anything) is cheaper.
For me, horsepower/engine weight is more important than horsepower/liter. By that measure, big OHV V8s kick ***.
Ford should've followed Saleen's lead in developing a motor for the GT, an NA 7.0 V8 would've been much better than the overwrought, overweight DOHC supercharged engine they went with.
Of course 99% of the buying public perceives DOHC as being "superior". This is really only true if displacement is limited.

Upset that it makes the same power as the old M5 motor which had DOHC, VVT, etc etc, with only an extra ~40ci or so?

I though the same thing.

Funny how the "low tech engine" is more powerful and gets far better fuel economy 16/25 vs. 13/21 in the M5.
If low tech means more HP, more torque, better MPG, lighter, lower cg, more reliable, cheaper to mod , cleaner emmissions, and cheaper to build and maintain, than I'll take "low tech" any day.

Thanks guys.I guess I will just try and find the northstars and aurora V8s.I love the cam in block tech but would like to just toy around with something different.I see and read about fords 4.6 and 5.4s and know GM could make something better. It would be cool to have a performance oriented RWD car from GM with some kind of DOHC motor.
Didja see what they (CandD) said about the BMW 645i convertible? <paraphrased>: "Nice Camaro"
BWAHAHAHAHAHA!
BMW *used* to make lightweight fun-to-drive sport sedans. Now they make OVERweight OVERwrought gizmo contraptions with styling from Mars. They have truly lost their way.

when I used to hang at Corner-Carvers.com (mostly Mustang roadracers), the DOHC mod motor was so much reviled that some would actually swap the old 5.0 liter (or stroker 5.4) OHV motor into their mod-motored track cars! All that motor did for the Mustang was add 200 lb. and reduce its reliability. Two guys I know from the track (road courses) have gone through three mod-motors in two seasons on their street/track Mustang Cobras. These aren't race cars, just street cars that they track maybe 6-8 times a year.
There is a performance-oriented rwd GM car with a DOHC motor: Cadillac XLR. Bring bags of $$$$$!
If you do swap in a DOHC motor lemme know so I can put yer LS1 in my 240Z!

Actually Dan I would never ever think of snatching my LS1 out for anything other than another bigger cubed stronger LS(1,2,6,7)
I would like to put the DOHC motor in a 91 S10.Or I was thinking of trying to fit one in a late 70s 280ZX.
