Maybe they can include a "valet" setting as well. Didn't the LT5 ZR1 Vettes come with a special "key" that could be turned on to "valet mode" which thusly cut the HP in half?

I like the idea of it, but there is one thing I must wonder about. Say you're cruising at 70 or 80 mph in 6th gear, what happens if you decide to speed up a little and apply the throttle halfway? Do all 8 cylinders engage, or will you be left with the torque of a 6 or even 4 cylinder? One of the great things about a V8 is that you can get moving so easily without giving it much throttle. If that wasn't there, I'm not sure I'd even bother getting a V8.

I can't see why any1 wouldn't want it. Especially if it works great
We need to find out who has broken into IZ's account and is posting with his user name.

all 8, as soon as you let off the gas it would go back to 4

Though i'd be very content with the current mileage, better fuel economy is always better. Especially when performance isn't being sacrificed.

I'm all for Dod if done right.

Wow, I'm not alone, 2 others voted no!

It's true about that GM most likely has fixed most of the problems with DoD, but the old Caddy one did suck. The argument that you can just turn off the DoD dosen't hold water with me. I bet you will be able to get a similer size normal engine for less money.

All the argueing about it aside, I have one qestion about DoD. Will the new one rotate which cylinders are off? If not I would think you will see some very worn piston rings pretty quick....

Yes, it cycles the cylinders. Also, for smoothness reasons there is no 6-cylinder mode, just 4 or 8.

you guys arent looking deep enough into this subject.............

the bigger question................

if we do get DoD, will the ricers still say we have low tech engines?

D.O.D. uses a set of collapsable lifters on 4 of the 8 cylinders. Two center cylinders on one bank, two outer cylinders on the other bank. Those cylinders only can be cycled on and off. So, with D.O.D. turned on, the engine operates in V4 mode.

Piston ring or cylinder wear is not an issue. Most of that occurs during start and warm-up. D.O.D. starts and warms up on all cylinders. And during light load cruising (when D.O.D. is active) piston loads are light, wear is negligible.

I forsee three areas that will be trouble with D.O.D.

1. quality issues with the lifters, causing stuck lifters (open or closed)
2. same as above with the switching solenoid.
3. software problems.

Tearing into some of the code in the GM ecu's... their programming is real solid but sometimes I question their motives. Although by the time we get a new Camaro DoD will be a few years old and the bugs will be worked out hopefully.

I still voted no until I see it working 100%.

If I could afford it, I'd take it.

If it was an extra 5 G's - forget it.

Comparing DOD to Cadillac's old system is like comparing a 486 PC to a Pentium 4. Their basic ideas are similar...but there is a huge difference in how thy do things.
