Displacement on Demand (DoD), who wants it?

who wants this on a 5th gen camaro?
just seeing what kinda responses this will get, feel free to comment
and for those who don't know what it is, what it does is take an 8 or 6 cylinder engine and turn off 4 or 2 cylinders respectively (8 to 4 and 6 to 4) when you are cruisin, or aren't accelerating hard
it also regulary turns all cylinders on about every 10 minutes or so, but it is all seamless meaning, you cant tell whether its running 4 or 8

Maybe the question should be modified.

Given the choice of a gasoline powered DoD V8 or an gas/electric hybrid V8, which would you prefer?

Based on the current direction of making V8 power more environmentally friendly due in part to evolving Federal emissions standards, we may be limited in our choices sometime in the near future.

At some point down the road, if you want a fossil fueled powerplant with all pistons running 100% of the time, your choices may be limited to 5 cylinders... OR LESS!

Again, I reiterate.... don't fear technology... embrace it!

I want it.

Personally, I don't care if it gives me an extra 20-30 miles per tank. I like it because it will improve GM's CAFE rating and therefore allow them to make more powerful cars. Power I do care about .

If it works like they say it does, than I'm all for it. Apparently it does....seamlessly. That's impressive and in the bigger picture, a huge boost to GM and the V8 public image. Go for it!

If it works, why would you not want it?

IF it works without any problems then I might be interested. Until then they have to show me that they imporved it from the 80's version. I know, I'm old fasioned.

I'm all for it!

If the technology is there, let's do it.

The only legitimate concern I've heard so far on D.O.D. is the potential sound for a sports car...

I am amazed the poll is 12-0 for it right now though... I'm waiting for someone to bring up the old 8-6-4 Cadillac motor arguement ( ), or say "I want all 8 cylinders pumping no matter what <grunt> <grunt> That's the only way a real muscle/sports car should be ( )"

My hats is off to all those who have voted so far!

I was considering the very same thing. What will the car sound like at cruise with 4 cyls pumping? Would most people be willing to sacrifice the true V8 grunt at cruise for more fuel economy? I'd rather avoid that but if it gives me a badass 5th gen Z28 that operates like a V8 when I want it to, well, I'm in. I'll take DoD anyday and I believe it will be VERY beneficial to the Camaro. Chances are, when the car's running on 4 cyls, it'll be pretty quiet regardless and cant sound bad anyway unless the car gets stuck on 4 cyls due to a freak computer malfunction. At any rate, bring on the DoD.

Its very simple.. WHY NOT??? it will make bigger engines available and I bet that an editor for the PCM will change it and put it off if you want to, in the mean time, no paying gas guzzler tax nor other taxes and its more affordable...

If it does work and it adds 2 o 3 mpg.. hey.. the ls1 already gives me 33mpg on highway without a problem... 3 more are even better

I can't see why any1 wouldn't want it. Especially if it works great and if the engines don't cost too much that is.

Re-read the post above yours. I was going to respond to it, but it's just not worth it.

yeah, that was me

I would love to hear a response, the old caddy one sucked. plain and simple. I bet GM has improved it, but that has yet to be seen.

And yes, I want all my cylinders all the time!

If its not going to substantially raise costs, then yes...

Oh, and how transparent it is.. thats smoething that I'd probably have to check out myself for final verdict.

Caddy didn't have the computer tech 20+years ago that we have now.

4-6-8 PCM = pong
'05 DoD PCM = Matrix Reloaded CGI

plus I'm sure you will be able to disable it if you really want to.
