Diesel Chevy Cruze news

http://www.autoblog.com/2011/10/24/d...ordstown-ohio/

The Detroit News reports that the diesel version of the Chevrolet Cruze will be manufactured at the General Motors Lordstown, Ohio plant. GM is slated to retool the facility's body shop and assembly line next year through a $5.5-million investment, according to Tom Mock, a spokesman for GM. The Lordstown facility already produces the gasoline Cruze on three shifts Monday through Friday in order to keep up with demand. The Detroit News reports that the plant has recently taken to operating on the weekends to maintain the volume, as well.

The diesel Chevrolet Cruze is set to arrive in 2013, and though GM hasn't released any official powerplant decisions or fuel-economy estimates as of yet, the vehicle is expected to return somewhere around 50 miles per gallon when it arrives. This is the first legitimate diesel passenger car effort from a domestic manufacturer in years, and rumors indicate the vehicle will come boasting a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel with around 147 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque.

This is awesome. Hopefully this will start changing Amercican attitudes towards diesels. At 50 mpg the car will be a big seller.

Re: Diesel Chevy Cruze news

I could quite possibly drive a small car....if it had a diesel.

The only thing is that I've got this Wrangler now. I love it's old engine (new V6's just don't sound like that anymore), and the fact that it's got no a/C, cruise, power ANYTHING...just 6 cylinders and just as many forward gears, and 4 wheels. I don't even have to jack it up to do an oil change, plastic fenders don't door-ding, I can see over everything, and the only road noise is from the 33's humming down the freeway. 21mpg.

I just wonder how much they will cost. The eco already cost 20k, adding a diesel option will cost? Not to mention the added cost of diesel.

Not that I'm against this in anyway, I just think that GM will have to really hit a home run, especially with pricing for it to succeed in the US.

If it goes much above 25K it won't sell. People will look at larger cars at that price point. That is why VW sells the tdi in several cars.

The 235 ft-lb of torque will feel quite nice when you hit the gas pedal. It may not accelerate as fast as the gas engine, but it will feel strong.

With 147 HP (9 more than gasoline version), and way more torque, it should out-accelerate the gasoline version to 60mph and in the 1/4 mile.

This is what I was thinking.
If the weight is the same and the overall gearing is similar, it should be quicker than the gas version and get way better mileage to boot.

Either that or burn the front tires off when you hit the gas.

Re: Diesel Chevy Cruze news

Definitely makes the Snuze a little more appealing, at least for a DD...

Re: Diesel Chevy Cruze news

Not quite sold on it yet. It's rated 8 mpg better than the Cruze Eco and is likely to cost more. That coupled with diesel fuel costing roughly $0.50 a gallon more than conventional gas I don't see it as being a better alternative to what's out there already.

Re: Diesel Chevy Cruze news

Its got the same hp and over 100ftlb more torque than the turbo 4cyl. That will probably be worth it to many people.
