See. Your problem is that you continually believe that the union abuses their power. But they don't. They NEGOTIATE good contracts for their members. The companies don't have to go along with them. No one's twisting their arms. The companies could just call in replacement workers, like Northwestern Airlines has done. And I guess all the concessions within this current contract don't mean a thing to you, either.
And you know what? It it "us against them". And it should be for every working person in this country. Union or non-union. Because without that mentality, big business will just take and take and take.....ALL working class people lose.
My point throughout all these arguments is that there are 2 sides to a story. I've never said that the union was completely innocent. Most of you guys just want to believe what comes out in the media. You can't believe that it could be anything else but the union.
But the topper is how you have to resort to name calling ("paranoid stooge") and trash talk ("reading your garbage") and ("i bet you stay up at night dreaming up ways "THE MAN" is plotting to take down the UAW. The scary part is that you probably believe all of those stories you dream up").
Now that's a good debate tactic
. And real mature.

R377,
Delphi's problems may not be as big as Enron's or Worldcom's. But, in the public eye, improprieties are improprieties. I'm not sure it's going to matter how BIG the issue is to the average person. They'll just see it as another example of corporate abuse.

It's this mentality that is the problem w/ the Union. No Company Loyalty. They think that without the Union GM would be paying them slave wages when in fact we have laws against that now. And you could migrate to your local Toyota shop. There's no law forcing you to stay with GM? They have to be at least competitive to keep work.
I work hard for my company, and I am paid better in return. I also make commission.
I have an idea! Let's make the UAW members pay based on job performance. You do better you make more, you get lazy - your paycheck takes a dive... Think about it.

Wow, lots of hot air, but strangely devoid of anything to backup your argument.
As to the "abuse", please someone, anyone, bring some kind of evidence of this. And no, the doom and gloom reporting from a UAW employer is not "evidence".
Seems to me, that the anti-unioin/UAW front just has a lot of complaining to do, but nothing concrete to backup it's position. BTW, everyone who posts to this board from work, can recuse themselves of any and all union bashing.
Please, links to videos of factories that have these "abusive" workers, or any stories documenting mass abusiveness. The onesy twosy stories won't wash here. You'll always have someone ready to screw up in any job, regardless of unions or not.
Editorial: Wow, there is a ton of BS flying around here...

Not twisting their arms? Replacement workers? Have you ever even witnessed a UAW strike? Apparently not.
Re: Delphi files bankruptcy today!!!
While the UAW is getting good wages and benifits for their workers, it can also be seen as abuse by others. My question is why havn't upper management taken pay cuts? Why do they not see that necessary? I think that what UAW workers are afriad of is that they will get paid $10 an hour and mangement will take that extra money and give it to themselves.
Why must it be necessary for management in GM, or any of the big 3, to make the pay they get while the company suffers? I like what Bill Ford as done over at his company. He has proved to everyone that he is determined to turn the company around. What he is doing is more then just words.
While I'm still not for the UAW or most unions, from my dad's personal experience, I think it maybe time for management to take some cuts too? The street to making a profit is not one-way.

Re: Delphi files bankruptcy today!!!
I used to think that just the unions were to blame. Nowadays, I think both sides should share the blame for some of the problems with big American companies. On the one hand, the unionized workers: They want to divvy up most of the profits, have job security, health care, generous pensions, and frequent large raises. They want a lifetime commitment to their well being, without having to make a lifetime commitment. However, they want all of these things through the good times and the bad. They don't mind sharing the profits, but they'll be damned if they will share the losses.
On the other hand we have management. How many times have we seen companies handing out 5 or 6 digit yearly bonuses to all of the upper management, even in years where the company has lost billions? How many times have we seen an upper level person, who is being cut loose after sinking the ship, being given a multi million dollar severance package? How many creative accounting scandals do we have to hear about, where a small handful of executives get very rich, while everyone else loses everything?
Both sides are to blame. Both sides see a huge company with lots of money, and both sides think "lets grab as much of the loot as we can, and to heck with the future prospects of the company".

Anyhow, It's actually kind of nice to go into a UAW shop because I can bull**** with the workers the whole time while I'm waiting on management to talk to me. And believe me they'll take as long as they can, lol. I've witnessed the "That's not my job" mentality I can't even count how many times. It's sickening. And they still end up bitching about how hard they "supposedly" have to work.
Then I go into the Steel Mills where they are working their *** off with no time to talk to ANYBODY and have been asked on several occasions to help them. (Usually pays off on the sales end...
)So I'm not going to waste my time trying to find an article which is about as worthless as hot air anyhow. But I will say one thing, take a group of UAW workers and throw them in a Steel Mill, and I'll put money they wouldn't last a week.
And BTW I'm on vacation today...

And I in no means think that every UAW worker is like this. But as the old saying goes - it only takes a few bad apples to spoil the barrel

That's why I work for a small company, LOL.
Unfortunately, a small company could never survive in the Automobile world. The regulations and competition of the larger companies render any small start with a 0% chance of making it. But the US as a whole is heading in that direction. Walmart, etc..

I know its hard with your inflated ego, i would speculate a short man syndrome, but stay current with the topic. Your ignorant personal attacks should be checked at the door.
I will concur. No degree, lack of degree, or personal standing can 100% percent guarantee a perfect job. But there is ALWAYS work available.
As far as union busting goes.....thanks and say goodbye to the middle to upper middle class salaries...... yippee....more poverty, and a bigger bottom line for corporate america.....

To share a little blame with the upper management. Delphi "sweetened the severance packages for 21 of it's top executives the day before seeking bankrupcy". What kind of message did that send?
What we need is more of a small company mentality for these huge companies. There are plenty of problems to go around but this should be a time that the company unites and everyone top to bottom makes sacrifices. The UAW does not want to make more consessions when the upper management are making none and I don't blame them. Even if the bonuses and such don't affect the companies bottom line too much it still makes the company and the management look bad. To be honest none of the employees are really suffering yet. Only the company.
I would propose that everyone make some sacrifices based on their pay plus benefits to try and reduce operating costs( including retirees and upper management). It wouldn't fix the problem, but it would be a start. It would be nice if you could get rid of the ones who do not want to contribute but that will never happen.
