Sure, the Zero looked nice, but the "spontaneously bursting into flames" quirk was a small issue...

No armor = lightwieght = maneuverability + .50 caliber burst = orange ball of flame.

I liked the F4U better, with the distinct bent wing, its unmistakable. Just like the vette (minus a bent wing, or an wing for that matter)
