Smile A couple interesting GTO/Camaro threads from LS1.com...

This one was begun by a gent who spoke with Jon Moss at a social gathering; Moss commented about the next Camaro coming back...

http://www.ls1.com/forums/showthread...s&pagenumber=1

According to him, Moss said the Camaro will be back in 08 or 09!

This one says there will be 2004 GTO pix and info in with the XXX DVD being released 12/31/02:

http://www.ls1.com/forums/showthread...hreadid=216671

I was planning to get that DVD anyway... guess I will just accelerate the timetable for buying it

This one has the following quote and external link regarding reasons for the FBody hiatus:

http://www.ls1.com/forums/showthread...hreadid=216520

Also heard it was because GM currently has a contract with the workers at the ontario plant that says while they change bodystyles they must pay the workers lost wages, unles... they discontinue the model name for two years resulting in the expiration of the contract...this way in 2004 they can bring back the f-body starting over with new wages at a lower payment to the workers and with a brand new contract starting over from where they started in 1967......basically the sales of the f-body weren't great enough for them to give there people lost wages.....even more basicically put gm is being greedy.....

from here http://discussions.gmforums.com/show...threadid=20360
I don't agree with the "GM being greedy" part, I think it comes down to profit and loss; but nonetheless it is interesting if true. I believe it is at least a part of the reason for the hiatus.

If 08 or 09 is right, then GM will again be late to the party... offering it's modern affordable performance coupe 5+ years after the compitition.

2008 or 2009? Why even Bother?

If that is true, listen for a pronounced sucking sound... That will be all the die hard GM enthusiasts leaving in droves to take part in the greatest affordable performance market of all time - Right Now .

There's a big difference between showing up fashionably late and getting there after the party is over. At that point, it's better never than late.

As with all the other hearsay and off-the-cuff remarks, this should be taken with a grain of salt. What's to stop them from doing it earlier? Also... it was a few years after the original Mustang came out before the Camaro arrived. And despite the phenomenal magnitude of success of the original Mustang, the Camaro and Firebird managed to carve out a sizeable 35-year niche.

And BTW... I have no dispute with this being the new "golden age" of performance. However, I see no reason for it to end anytime soon - being driven mostly by technology. ABS, EFI, TCS, DOD... these are the new tools for performance! This and more will no doubt be on the next Camaro. As for market share... I believe the new GTO will help GM hold its own until the 5gen Camaro arrives. WERM - maybe you missed the LS6 reference in the GTO thread

"Affordable" is a relative term... and the IRS/LS6 GTO will be a performance steal compared to a BMW M3.

2008 is too late for me, but it'd give the current camaro-mullet stereotype (even if you dont agree with it, still cant deny that it exists) enough time to die out with the up-and-comming young generation. But as long as the reg cab Silverado SS comes out as show, man I'll be a happy GM camper.

I take it with a grain of salt though. Hell I dont take half the stuff I read in mags serious. Maybe Im getting old/senile. I only trust guion

08 or '09 is a good time for the Camaro to be back. It seems like a long time away but it isn't. It'll give me plenty of time to save up some money for it. I will definitely buy one then.

08-09

I'll be in the market this summer, next spring (04) at the extreme latest.
I never thought I would ever look at buying a stang, but I can't deny the power of the new cobra which is greater than the GTO and at a lower price.

I have to agree that 80-09 is wayy too late,
the Cobra is out now
the 350Z is out now
the RX8 is out what in a few months
then how many others are coming out with similar niche cars?

"Too Little, Too Late"

If they only have to wait till 04-05 why not bring it out then, any later seems senseless, unless its to build the anticipation,

While I understand the frustrations of people posting here who will be on the market soon... I have to chuckle. I waited nearly TWO DECADES before insurance was cheap enough for me to afford a V8 Fbody. If I wanted a new Camaro today - I could of course still buy one. If I wanted a new one in 2005 but discovered I'd have to wait until 2007 or even 08, I wouldn't go into conniptions. Jeez people.

Most people won't go in to conniptions - they'll just buy something else. Only the die hardest of the die hards will wait 5 years.

How many true Camaro intenders are on the market right now? (That is, the ones who for some reason do not want to buy a new Camaro available today even though they still can?) Plus I thought I read the average duration of ownership for a new car is 7 years which would end in 2009 if started today. Even a lease is typically 36 months (which beginning now would mean maturity in 12/05). All during which, the LS1/6 GTO will be available to tide them over. GM performance fans have a sunny future

Ford fans however will forever be struggling to make the Mustang into a Corvette fighter

Unfortunately, you fail to take into account that most camaro owners bought their cars BEFORE 2002. Those production numbers are much heavier weighted towards the early 4th gen years. Also, the average ownership for sports cars is shorter than average cars. Most camaro owners are either unwilling or unable to pay 35K-40K for a car, so your observation that a limited production LS6 gto will "tide them over" is flawed. Finally, there are lots of "Intenders" including myself, who would not have purchased (or purchase) a 2002 Camaro because it hasn't been updated significantly. Lot's of people feel that if they are going to shell out the cost of a new car, it ought not to feel like the same damn car.

Sad but true - the reality is, at the 2008+ time line, most will have moved on.

Amen to that!

My '95 is 7 years old. I'd love a "new" Camaro, but I'm not shelling out $30-40K when there's barely a difference over my '95... especially in styling.

Since Chevrolet killed "my" Camaro, I'm going the alternative route, either by (a) fixing up the one I already have... or (b) buying an older one and fixing that up!

I'm still a "Chevy-man" and will always be one... however there is only so much I can take.

Z284ever - I am interested in what's holding you back. A while ago you posted a set of options (orange metallic, Hurst shifter, etc)... is that the only configuration you'd buy? Because I did some more poking around in a few cities using gmbuypower.com - feeding it zip codes from usps.com (yes I know, I am clearly bored, maybe because the wifey and I got done with our Christmas shopping early). Here's some data from inputting just one zip code in a few major cities:

Los Angeles - has 50 Z28's, a lot of black, some white/pewter/silver/red, one monterey maroon, no orange

Chicago - has 20 Z28's, color mix like LA but not as much black (makes sense in a colder climate), + one maroon

St Louis - has 4 Z28's, including a red SS at JACK SCHMITT CHEVROLET OF O'FALLON

Atlanta - has 23 Z28's including a red SS at SERVICE CHEVROLET OLDS in Calhoun GA.

If it's not having a shot at Sunset Orange Metallic, that I fully understand!

Oh, I am so cruel!

Seriously - what's holding you back?
