Corvette SS. Is that a good idea?

Although there have been reports to the contrary, the LS9 Corvette is still being referred to internally as the Corvette SS. If the production car gets this name, is that a good idea?

LS9 in a Corvette = good idea
SS badges on a Corvette = bad idea

Wouldn't be my first or even second choice (my first/second choices would be Stingray or ZL1), but if it is as bada$$ as it sounds, it would only do good things for the SS badge. I am sure many would not like for it to be called a SS, but I think many would get over it.

I'd worry more about the Corvette name being carried down by something like that than I would about SS being helped by it.
ZL1. I think it will be limited enough to justify it and like I've stated before, I think this will be the last powerful car in the Vette line for awhile.

I was under the impression that it had already been renamed to Stingray?

That's exactly right. Certainly, the marketing guys will see a beneficial tie-in for a Malibu SS, et al, but I think, at the expense of Corvette itself.

BTW, Chevy shouldn't be so anxious to tell the racing story of the Corvette SS at it's only race - the 1957, 12 hours of Sebring. It was a DNF, after only 23 laps.

Reportedly, Ed Cole (Chevy GM at the time), was embarrassed that the Corvette SS proved vastly unready to compete at Sebring.

ZL1 is appropriate, IMO. SS is getting so overplayed, that I swear someone at Chevy has a **** fetish.

Its not a good idea if the Corvette SS is more powerful then the Z06 , then GM will surely make the 2009 Camaro SS more powerful then the 2009 Camaro Z28.

We all know the Z28 should be more powerful then the SS, right??

That occurs to me every other time I hear that...

"Heir Lutz, he has sent his SS!"

That being said, I don't think its a horrible idea. If the rest of the lineup is going to be fairly consistent I don't see a huge problem.

Stingray, I don't think is that great because people associate it with the body and look, not the performance.

like someone said a while ago... anything can be a SS but only a camaro can be a z28... kinda off there, but... it tells you RIGHT there, the SS is way over played... no SS for the vette!

The problem is the Z06 is a hot seller and has "Street Credit". I don't think they want that name on something that may be a "limited run" version...

Although, I still don't think they'll use the SS. Hard to tell really.

Re: Corvette SS. Is that a good idea?

I think it would be a horrible idea. SS just does not belong on a Vette. SS historically has been a higher performance version of a base type car that is not very performance oriented. There is nothing about the BASE Vette that is not performance oriented. The Vette already is an SS, a ZL1 or a Z06 designation would be much more appropriate IMO

Re: Corvette SS. Is that a good idea?

ZL1....hmmm how about LT1 or LS1 or LS6 or LS....... I don't understand the fascination with the ZL1 moniker it was an expensive engine option on the Corvette/Camaro in the late 60's. Maybe call the engine a ZL1 and the model something else like ZR1. ZR1 was a performance package on the Vette in the 60's and the 90's.

Re: Corvette SS. Is that a good idea?

Just because the car is being referred to internally as a Corvette SS, still doesn't mean it will be one. Scott has stated the previous z06 Vette was referred to internal as SS as well.

If we did see a Corvette SS, it is a safe bet that the top Camaro is going to be SS as well.
