cobalt interior bogey
Re: cobalt interior bogey
That looks a lot like the interior of a new Camry I perused when I was dropping the munchkin off at school this morning...
If that's the case, why set the bar for the Cobalt against a larger/higher price point car?
IMO, Civic (quality, feel) and Mazda 3 (design, aesthetics) set the bar for small cars. These interiors, among many other things, are what the Cobalt needs to go after.

That appears to be the new Corolla interior. Looks flat-out amazing for an entry level compact car.
I don't care much for the wood grain but I almost never like wood - especially fake wood. I'm sure there's an option for just silver/aluminum/nickle trim or at least standard in the 'sports' model.
I also don't care for the almost completely flat looking arm rest on the door.
But those are qualms I tend to have with higher-dollar cars and I'm using them against a car that costs a fraction of that, so I can let it slide.
I wonder if the motors are going to get any more ballsy this time around?
edit: I got a phone call while typing this up and none of the discussion was present in the thread.

Re: cobalt interior bogey
I have to admit that looks pretty nice, especially for the price point.
This coming from someone who thinks that, in general, the styling superiority of import interiors is overrated.

Say that interior's available here next year. GM gets ahold of it, and takes it apart and find out how it's made, and they create a interior that at least matches it. Over a year's past. Then things are cut due to cost. Then it's bidded out to the lowest cost OEM. The next Cobalt interior redo is probally scheduled for 2009.
In the end, you have an interior that much like the current Cobalt looks stylish and great, but is behind what the Japanese are putting out. First, you're perpetually playing catch-up. Second you are going about it from a cost perspective instead of a improvement perspective. Third, (and this is the thing that it seems alot of people don't understand is) the competition isn't standing still. The Cobalt's interior is easily just as good as any comparible Japanese car.... from 4 years ago.
Finally (and this is something that will NEVER be compensated for), is the fact that Japan's system is set up to encourage people to keep buying to keep the economy going. Taxes, registration, and inspection requirements almost force people to buy new cars. As a result, the Japanese car industry is geared heavily towards making cars as close to perfect in the showroom to remain competitive. 4 years down the road, when most cars tend to be traded in or getting a little expensive to keep on the road, they start to get a little ragged more quickly than US cars.
One thing that might be considered (as far as better made interiors) is for the domestic industry to go back to manufacturing their own interiors. That's what makes Holden and Ford Australia interiors far superior to what we get here, yet at the same time, their cars are sold for about the same prices as comparable cars sold here.

Brushed aluminum in place of that HIDEOUS wood and it would look pretty nice.

I know GM has to at least put the wheel on the correct side of the car.
