Chinese Exports Welcome in Detroit
I have no opinion either way on Gov Granholm generally, but she has chosen option 2, and I can see why. It seems a far more grown-up response to reality than sticking one's head in the snow and wishing it was 1970 again, which as far as I can tell is where ProudPony et al are coming down.
Nor do I want to continue to see our domestic lifestyle erode.
Nor do I want to see our American blue collar citizens languish in adversity.
Nor do I want to see our economy continue to shift in bad directions.
Nor do I want to see China yeilding any more control over the US.
Nor do I want to see China garner yet more economical clout at our dispense.
et al...
I don't want to go back to 1970... 1960... or 1950...
But I WOULD like to see Americans as proud of their heritage, their communities, their jobs, and their products as they were in 1945.
What I am saying is that I want us to continue "to lead", not become "the led".
And for the record, I have no bias or prejudice against ANY people on this earth. I am as open-minded as anyone can be when it comes to diverse culture and ethnicity. However, I do hold those with American Citizenship above those who don't have it... not too much above, but definitely some. I don't want to live like people in China, Africa, Czech Republic, Afghanistan, etc. I want better for me and my family, but I do want to help those other nations and their people after I have my problems under control.
You see, I believe that what made America great is it's diversity... we are made up of people from all over, but they are now Americans... paying taxes, serving in civil and military capacities, and doing it the right way to support our cause. We should protect our own before we go off trying to protect others in the world - much less giving our precoius freedoms away without any cause whatsoever except for "saving a buck".
"Sticking your head in the snow and wishing" that the USA simply maintains it's status as the wolrd's greatest nation simply because "it always has" seems to have much more merit to it than actually taking a stand and doing something about it, doesn't it?
I mean, heck, we can throw billions of US dollars each year at a foreign nation and never expect it to have any effect on us, right? Heck, we'll even keep getting richer and more powerful while we do it because we are "the chosen ones"! Nothing will ever stop us!
Beautiful snow...
On the one hand, she did run on those promises, and I don't think she ever had a plan to execute - she was just going to "support" the big 2.5 in any way she could after taking office. It got her elected though, but now she realizes that she can't be a one-person savior of the local industry.
On the other hand, she should have stayed neutral if she was going to be honest with herself and the consituents of her state. It would likely not have gotten her elected, but she wouldn't have to stand in front of the people who elected her and explain why she is supporting the competition that is eliminating the jobs in her state.
She's in a catch-22. I see her in meetings with Bill Ford pledging tax breaks and incentives not to close Michingan factories, then I see her offer similar benefits to foreign companies that will compete directly, and will likely have lower-paying jobs if/when they do come into the area. Ummm... she really needs to pick a side, and make a stand. There is no way she can please 100% of the people, so acknowledge you will get some bad press from one side or the other, and DO something.
Someone once said, "It's better to be hated for who you are, than be loved for who you are not." In this case, I'll take the heat for breaking the status-quo, going out on my own, and standing behind the American companies that are doing their damnedest to bring world-class cars and trucks (and all other forms of manufacturing and production) to the market while keeping their long-ago made promises to the workers whose broken backs and worn-out bodies got them to the top in the first place.
IMO, all they really need is a fair shake and even political playing grounds, but even those basic things are hard to find when Federal, State, and local governments ignore equal trade laws and are throwing tax incentives at incoming offshore industry... and the media throws swords at the big 2.5 for anything not-perfect while flicking toothpicks at the offshore brands for serious flaws... and... oh, nevermind.
