Chevrolet Volt........ Profitable?
Haven't seen a thread on this, and hadn't seen in mentioned in the thousands of posts on GM's Bankruptcy...
But assuming GM goes bankrupt, the good parts stay open and the bad stuff goes to court for years, or whatever the hell is going to happen...
...Does bankruptcy open the door for the Volt to become profitable from the get go? I'm assuming most of the big money has been spent on development already... which it seems like it has...
...or am I totally understanding the bankruptcy thing wrong

Found this article:
Even at $48,000, GM will be taking a substantial loss with each sale of the Volt. In an interview with HybridCars.com on the morning of the Volt’s unveiling in Detroit, Lutz acknowledged that the company would have to subsidize the cost of the vehicle for “about as long as Toyota subsidized the price of the Prius” before it became profitable. That took Toyota about 10 years. If the Volt is a success, then GM could become a victim of its own success, suffering losses before the vehicle reaches economies of scale and starts turning a profit. If that’s the case, then GM and the Volt could also become a martyr in the process: ushering in a new age of green vehicles but hurting itself in the process.

It might be cheaper to build it then they had previously planned, but its still gunna be a loss for GM.
And Toyota didnt subsidise the Prius...the Japanese Goverment did.
GM might be able to shorten it if they can bring other cars, like the Converj, on line to help with economies of scale, not to mention have a car at a higher price point to at least come out even.
Not to mention...Converj is a beautiful car.

BK should help with the developement cost, however, production cost on the Volt are high. So, the cost of the car will be high to just break even. The bright side for GM and not us tax payers is that they can now use and perfect a will be proven tech.
