This isn't going well, the Volt could go down as the next Pinto if GM doesn't do some serious PR damage control on this. There are a whole lot of people that would love nothing more than for the Volt and GM to be an absolute failure. They will jump all over this.

Re: Chevrolet Volt Fire Leads to NHTSA Investigation of Lithium Batteries

What sucks is that the latest tests (which just came out in the news yesterday) were not of the whole car but just of the battery pack.
The media either doesn't say that or hides it way down in the article.
And the headlines read "More Volt Fires" while they show a picture of a Volt.

It's BS.

The headlines should read "Volt batteries spark and smoke a little bit when bashed to bits outside of the vehicle" and then show a picture of the battery pack.

I hope GM gets aggressive with these reckless media outlets.

It really doesnt seem fair how this is being presented in the media. I hope GM fights back. I wont ever buy a Volt but I want to see the car become a big success.

What's funny is with the governments big stake in GM they want to unload, you would think they would be a little more careful with how they handle a situation like this. I know it could be constued as a sign of impartiality..but lets be real. The way this has been presented thus far looks like they did not handle it fairly.

Here's the fix: if you get in an accident, have a dealer inspect your battery. Is it any more complicated than that?

The first thing I though of was the Corvair, Pinto and Fiero... all cars killed by the press for various reasons. This is the worst possible press the Volt can have as the one interesting feature it has is now seen as dangerous.

I'm hoping that some kind of rebuttle and subsequent investigation by GM hopefully finds a smoking gun. That this is either easy to fix or something along the lines of Dateline NBC vs. GM over the gas tank fires they rigged.
