A Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicle is powered by electric motors. They simply get their power from electricity generated by the fuel cell. Yet, they are not typically considered true EVs. The Volt is essentially the same thing. It gets its power from electricity, either stored in batteries charged from the power grid, or from a gasoline powered generator.

If you argue that a fuel cell vehicle is an Electric Vehicle, then I would concur so could be the Volt. However, I can't recall ever seeing a fuel cell vehicle being called an EV.

I know its all semantics, and don't get me wrong, I love the idea of the Volt; however as an Engineer I'm prone to thinking in terms of black and white, not shades of gray.

All the Ford Escape NYC Taxis are still running on their original batteries (300,000mi+). That is one of the best torture test you can put them through.

Infact OEM's suggest hybrids (which all feature batteries) never be used in taxi's because of the severe wear put on them.

GM did say in a chat that the Volt batteries they have tested have lasted well past the warranty period, which is great news.

FWIW There are Toyota Prius taxis already in use in San Francisco.
