Chrysler signs with Chery, intends to build small car in China
Bradford Wernle
The Chrysler group will get a global small car, under a letter of intent signed by CEO Tom LaSorda with China's Chery Automobile Co.
The agreement still has to be approved by the Chinese government and the DaimlerChrysler AG supervisory board, which meets in January, Chrysler spokesman Jason Vines said today.
Pending those approvals, manufacturing in China would begin soon "in automotive terms," Vines said.
The cars would carry an undetermined Chrysler group brand. The automaker showed a small-car concept at the 2006 Geneva auto show, the Dodge Hornet. Vines declined to say whether the new car would be the Hornet.

Apparently this IS for export to the US. It's Chrysler's way of building a small car that's US-designed (and that will supposedly feel like an American car) but that is priced to compete with the Koreans etc. Brave new world coming.
Not to be the one to say I told you so.... but....
I told you so.
Been there, seen it, rode in it, done that.
This is a BAD thing.
If any of you have stock in Diamler-Chrysler, you need to study it... SERIOUSLY.... in the next 12 months (or tomorrow, whichever comes first).

I don't see how this will be a bad thing for DCX stock. Assuming that the cars meet quality standards it should be a profitable deal for the company, more so than trying to make the Hornet in the US would have been. DCX has its own structural problems and probably isn't a buy at current prices, but that's another discussion.

I dont think DCX would venture into this business if they didnt think it would be profitable. They're not that stupid...
they blatently rip off designs from major manufacturers.
