Car built in Mexico now Higher initial quality then US made ones?

From: http://www.thecarconnection.com/inde...&sid=173&n=156

The initial quality level of vehicles produced at plants in Mexico and exported to the United States has surpassed that of vehicles manufactured at U.S. plants, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2003 Initial Quality Study (IQS) released this week. The study finds that initial quality of vehicles produced at plants in Mexico for the United States has improved a dramatic 35 percent in the past five years. This significantly outpaces the average five-year quality improvement of 19 percent among vehicles manufactured in the United States. While vehicles produced in the United States record an average initial quality score of 138 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), vehicles produced at Mexican plants average 135 PP100. A lower PP100 score reflects better initial quality.

What does country of origin have to do with quality??

If a car is engineered well, and the factory guys are trained well, and there is pride in ones work, and the whole process is designed to run smoothly, it simply doesn't matter if the cars made in Germany or India. Germany quality cars have been made in South Carolina for some time, and Fremont California has been doing Toyota quality for a bit longer.

Mitsubishi is using engines that are not only assembled in Mexico, but was reengineered there as well. Volkswagen, Ford and Chrysler all have plants there, as I'm sure others do as well.

I think in Mexico if you receive high quality marks, they unshackle you from your work post and let you go out in the courtyard for 5 minutes to eat rice and beans, and they also double your weekly salary to $10 a week.

Workers are only as good as their management. If you train workers to pay attention to detail and not to finish something as quicly as possible that will help too, but like mentioned above, some cars are better engineered than others, bolts go together easier, parts fit better, etc.... I think this is just another excuse for GM to take away American jobs thanks to Slick Willie's NAFTA.

I'd say its more the Unions that destroy Quality rather than the individual worker

Actually that was a Republican goal, and "Slick Willie" went along with it. Democrats as a group opposed it under heavy lobbying from US labor unions.

Deleware Republican Bill Roth's comittee passed the "fast track" negotiating authority (the only opposition came from Democrat Kent Conrad). President Bush (the 2nd) is the one who pushed "fast track", and is benefitting from it.

NAFTA was originally championed & initiated by George Bush (the 1st) and was attacked by Ross Perot in the campaign of 1992. In 1992 Bill Clinton also opposed NAFTA, but later pretty much went against his party, and joined the GOP in supporting it. NAFTA was expanded last year by giving the President the ability to make agreements on his own, w/o congressional approval ("Fast Track").

You'll probally want to check how your senators & representatives voted.

Though it's flattering to think so, but "Slick Willie" didn't have the power to singlehandedly create NAFTA, and as mentioned, if he had to rely on his own party, it would have likely never seen the light of day in Congress.

So before we start throwing blame around, lets make sure it's thrown at the right people.

Senate Passes Fast Track, Paves Way for Super NAFTA: The Senate voted 64 to 34 to pass Fast Track trade negotiating authority and set the stage for a new wave of NAFTA-style trade agreements. The vote follows a close battle in the House, which voted late last week 215-212 to pass the bill. In the bill, Congress gave up its right to amend future trade agreements. President Bush and his successors now have a blank check to negotiate trade agreements that will harm working families. "It is unbelievable. In the midst of an ever deepening recession, Congress wants to ship even more manufacturing jobs out of the U.S. and Canada," said IAM President Tom Buffenbarger. "Anyone in Congress who voted for Fast Track ought to work in a Maquiladora factory for a day. They’d be paid about what they are worth as a legislator – next to nothing." In the Senate vote, 43 Republicans, 20 Democrats and one independent voted for the bill. Five Republicans and 29 Democrats voted against it. "We will remember how each Senator and Representative voted on Fast Track and their vote will echo across this union through Election Day, November 5th," Said Buffenbarger. See how your Senators and Representative voted: http://www.senate.gov/legislative/vo...ote_00207.html & http://clerkweb.house.gov/cgi-bin/vo...rollnumber=370 (Fast Track authority was tacked on to the Andean Trade Preference Expansion Act.) Yea, but Slick Willie had the power to Veto it. There is no way it would have gone through w/out his approval. He was the president in charge when it was inacted and I blame him the same way I blame GB sr. for his tax hike after claiming no new taxes. Clinton PUSHED for it. If he didn't and Bush jr. voted it in, i'd blame him the same way. Too many politicians taking too many campaign contributions from big business, promising them the world and giving it to them if they donate. Anyone who doesn't have stock in the company gets hurt.

It's Funny how people bitched about GB Sr. raising taxes and now they are bitching about BW Bush lowering them.

anyways... enough about politics.. Does anyone have stats on past J.D. Power reviews?? I'd like to see how far cars have come in the past 10 years
