Can we start over?

There have and will be, many Ford models with a "GT" emblem. It is a model designator like SS is. Both are created for volume sales. We are most familiar with Mustang...but there have been many more, like Probe GT and Torino GT, and others.
GT is Ford's parallel to SS, rather than SVT.

As I said in the other thread, you are missing the point. SS means performance upgrade but not necessarily blistering performance upgrade.

If SS means performance upgrades....at a reasonable price and with mass appeal...then it will be a huge success.

You got that right. The SSs of today is nothing like it was in the 60's.

I would stack up the current Impala SS's straight line performance against 90% of the SS's from the '60s....including most (but not all) big blocks.
If you're talking total performance, ie., braking, handling.....the Impala SS would put the hurt on all of 'em.

If the new Malibu SS comes with that rumored 285hp V6, i think it would uphold the SS name quite well in performance

It just won't be as pretty as the G6.

then can we have a z/28 go against the svt cobra or is the ss the top dog and the z/28 below that?

Trying not to go there.....
But the point I'm trying to make, (leaving Camaro out of it, for now) is...that you cannot take a performance brand or designation designed for mass appeal...and compete tit for tat, with a limited production, performance focused organization like SVT successfully.
Because, even if you win....that is outsell them...you've lost, because you haven't captured enough volume.

Ford uses "GT" to distinguish between the base V6 Mustang and the sportier V8 Mustang. Therefore, we compare "Z28" with "GT" and "SS" with "Cobra" (SVT), and it isn't much of a stretch for us to compare "SS" to SVT as a whole.
The major difference here is SVT is a performance group, whereas "SS" is just a model designation.
Does Chevrolet need a special "SS" performance group? I say yes if they want to keep up with the Joneses, something they have shown us as being difficult for them to do.
Chevrolet had one "SS" model that could beat the competition... and they killed it!

I think no one should even mention Z28 on this thread.....pretty please.

I don't know. I REALLY liked the look of that blue Malibu SS that was shown earlier this year. Maybe with a little more exterior enhancements, it could be really great. It may not look as good as the GXP, who knows.............but I think the Malibu SS looked really good.

When I saw the Malibu in person....I can't really say that it quickened my pulse...but it's overall quality look, ie., fit and finish and interior....didn't give me the overwhelming impression of "vanilla" that the pictures do.

Placed amongst its comtemporaries, it doesn't appear to exhibit any exceptional performance. That's what makes it disappointed. Oh, yea, that and the fact that virtually the same package has been available for years as the GTP.
