I'm surprised that you're surprised. I'm just looking for a modern ponycar....that's all.

I have to laugh when I hear some of you guys. So many of you are so anti-retro.... yet you're looking for a Camaro that looks like it was designed in the '70s, '80s or '90s.....as long as it doesn't have any '60s cues I guess....BECAUSE THAT'S THE ONLY DECADE THAT COULD BE POSSIBLY CONSIDERED RETRO. I like 80s music...but I am not so overtly retro 80s/90s as it seems some here are.. (Still wearing your parachute pants and earth shoes?) Big car... lots of overhang. Oh yes....verrry sporty.

Hey look......the last new Camaro that I ever bought was in 1989. At the time I thought it was looking alittle old. That it was too big. That it had ridiculously large overhangs. I figured...what the heck, I'll get this one and get a newer, more modern looking one in afew years.


Guess what???!!!! 15 years later, I'm still waiting for the newer more modern looking one.

 

Bah, I disagree. How about some Z28 vs. SS instead?!

 

I'm picky on certain things, but not overly picky. Then again, i'm not as hardcore as some of the other guys here.

As long as the general car is to my liking or satisfaction, i'll most likely buy it.

I did not read thru all of these, but I agree with the general sentiment of "Come on , GM - tell us what the heck is going on here , and how long we will have to wait."

Those new Mustangs are sure nice, and a GTO is getting more appealing by the minute , but neither of those are a pony car in the Camaro/Firebird sense.

Then again, maybe I'll just hang on to my current car for a while - assuming, of course, that all the modern electronics & wiring hold up long term.

the first pony cars were the sport compacts of their day. what would be so wrong about a rwd compact with an LSx stuffed in it? it would handle and go like stink because of its small size. whats so wrong about that? Some of you want a bigger car??? why? its only going to have so much power and the bigger you make it the heavier it will be, therefore slower.

I'm more of a performance nut than a model specific person so take that as you want.

 

I would like a Camaro to still be able to hold two carts of groceries from SAMS... Which I can do now. If it isn't big enough to hold that much, then it is no better than having a Corvette.

Intresting thread. I also think it proves Z284ever's original point: beyond having a V8, RWD, being quicker than a Mustang, and having 2 doors, there really isn't much Camaro enthusiasts are picky about.

As for me, aside from having undefeateable automatic lights, these would turn me off of a 5th gen:

*Being as obscenely oversized as the 4th gen looks (remember, I'm a 4th gen owner).
*Having an interior that looks like it was made with the same simplistic attention to detail as my '97.
*Having a turning radius that takes up 4 lanes as my 4th gen does (even my bigger T-Bird can turn within 3 lanes).
*Being unable to stand on it's own without an overpowered engine (I bought a 4th gen purely for the drivetrain. Though entertaining, it isn't enough).
*Has outdated overhangs (the 4th gen's overhangs were out of date when it came out).

When I bought my car, I wasn't impressed with the direction Mustang GTs went, Ford stopped making SCs, and I wasn't into dropping the cash for a used M3. That made the F-body the only show in town, and since I felt Firebirds were nothing more than Camaros with a Corvette body kit, I got a Z28.

I love the power, the 6 speed, and the t-tops (though I rarely take them off), the aircon is the best you're going to find in any car on the planet, the hatch & fold down rear seat has been extremely useful, and I still get a kick driving through residential areas in 2nd gear, then letting off the gas just to see how many car alarms I can set off.

But my current Z28 still ranks number 2 out of about 20 on my list of most maddening cars I've owned. Crappy alternators, self eating clutches, a fuel guage that confuses a quarter tank with a quarter gallon, power window motors that seem to come from the factory already on a death bed, and an unmentionable amount of nickel & dime stuff that individually is a non-issue, but combined gets irritating. I won't mention the manifold vacuum leak that seems to be standard on LT1s over 120,000 miles.

GM has the drivetrain locked down. The styling is pretty hot, if O-L-D! F-bodies are also one of the last cars around with T-tops. Beyond that, there's nothing to reccomend the car (Camaro enthusiasts end up being the car's only supporters).

So, at the risk of sounding "picky", I hope GM changes that next round.

 

no rattles, windows that don't stop halfway up, easier to change plugs and such than my car, needs to be less than 30 thousand, and faster than a mustang please
