As Cadillac moves back the RWD, Lincoln is moving back to FWD
Lincolns move to FWD from autoweek.com
I think it is a bad move, Mercury should be Fords upscale FWD brand.

Ouch, that doesn't seem like a good move at all. It seems like a short-cut to getting more Lincoln cars out there. And why use the pedestrian chassis? Do they not have a decent rwd chassis for luxury or luxury-sport duty? Oh well, I'm sure Caddy doesn't mind.
Wrong conclusion!
There is a Lincoln sedan being developed off the 500, but the other FWD besed AWD vehicle is the next Aviator (which will move off the Explorer chassis). Ford is also developing a large RWD Lincoln that may or may not be a continuation of the Panther chassis. There is also a sedan for both Ford & Lincoln Mercury being developed off the new Mustang's platform.
Lincoln will have more FWD cars than Cadillac, but Lincoln is going for volume and "American Luxury" over Cadillac's world class construction, abilities, and exclusiveness. Sad to say, there's still a market for FWD luxury cars in the US.
The story was 100% accurate, but the assumption that Lincoln will become a FWD company is 100% wrong.
BTW: The story also doesn't mention that Thunderbird & GT will be replaced shortly after their production run expires, though they mention both will be retired after 2006.
There's plenty that article didn't say.

Of course it would also be neat if Ford really got ballsy and made the GT-40's replacement a Corvette killing T-bird

Even more intereasting is the Cougar....does Ford make it a personal luxury coupe or a car that leans more towards a luxury Mustang

well, 2 years ago at the nyc auto show mercury did have a coupe concept, forgot the name, off of the new mustang platform....Mercury Messanger or something, that was rmored to be the next cougar. rumors of cougars been around for a bit. And they did say that there will be a few variants built on the new stang platform.
So the Town Car is still Lincoln's best selling car? I don't see many on the road anymore, but I guess Town Cars don't really stand out anymore, especially compared to the Devilles running around. I guess the full-size RWD market is going well for Ford with the Vic/Marquis/Town Car.
I figured the Navigator was the best selling model for Lincoln.
Oh well I guess Ford will have the full-size RWD market to its self for a while longer. GM get your butt in gear.
