Caddy 4.6 VS Ford 4.6

Interesting, the Caddy motor is 470lbs and is $2500 for new production engines.

The '03/'04 Mach1 DOHC weighs 617lbs and cost over twice the price, $5800

The Northstar makes 20 less hp and 20 less lb-ft of torque, but overall it looks like a much better motor in terms of power to weight. And in the '05 STS it goes up to 320hp/315lb-ft.

320hp is 20hp less then the Mach 1's 305?
The Northstar in the XLR and SRX are both rated at 320hp in RWD format.

I don't think he was talking about ratings since the Mach 1 is underrated at 305 with actual output being closer to 330hp. That and it looks like he's going off the info on that site. They have the 300hp Northstar, and not the newer 320hp one.

30thZ286speed, i'm almost positive the Northstar doesn't make the 400lb-ft of tq advertised on that site. The real number is around 315lb-ft tq which is almost the same as the Mach's 317lb-ft tq rating wise.

Big difference in weight. Why is the Ford so damn heavy and the caddy fairly light?? @470lbs, it's even a little lighter than the pushrod Ls-1.

Underrated, yes but 330 is a little high, I always heard 320ish and always thought the Northstar and the DOHC were about equal in power.

Easy...GM is better then Ford.

it wasn't until a few years ago that the Ford 4.6 was making 300+ hp. the northstar has always been in the 280+ range. but considering VW makes a 4.2L for Audi A8 that makes 340hp and in some apps 360hp, the GM and Ford engines aren't exactly anything to marvel at.

Weight and physical size is one of my main complaints against the 4.6. Weight and physical size is one of my main likes about the LS1/LS6 (ok, power too).

FYI...the DOHC 4.6 made 280 HP in the Mark III back in 93. It went to 305 in 96 when introduced in the Cobra, and 320 (post-recall) in the 99 Cobra.

Physical size. Look at the two next to each other if you ever get the chance. The Northstar is pretty efficient space-wise for a DOHC design.

LS1's weighed in at about 411 lbs. fully dressed. The LS2 is even lighter still and should run just under 400 lbs. fully dressed.

What has to be noted in those weight comparisons is the INDUCED MASS of other components - meaning that as the package gets larger, the rails on the subframe have to be moved apart further, greater structure is required to hold the engine, larger springs and running gear are required up front, etc... So, the actual weight difference will be even greater than what a simple weighing of the motor would imply.

Finally, the physical size of the motor is crucial to aerodynamics. A taller motor will require a higher cowl and hoodline.

Yeah I knew that 400 lbs.-ft. wasn't right, I do believe the Northstar makes a little more torque, down lower in the rpm range than Fords 4.6L

Also there are 2 versions of the Northstar, a 275hp and 300hp version which is now 320hp across the board I believe except maybe DeVille DTS still has 300hp?

Re: Caddy 4.6 VS Ford 4.6

I have an old Road and Track from 1993 that does a comparison of the two engines. Pretty interesting stuff. I'll see if I can find it.
