Well, one reason people went to trucks is because of CAFE. They stopped selling large station wagons, and all the soccer moms ran out and bought much heavier, more dangerous, and less efficient SUVs. However, now the auto companies are just gaming the system with cars like the PT Crusier being categorized as a truck for fuel economy purposes.
That having been said, gas prices will force auto vendors to be more efficient. Mainstream cars have double the horsepower they did 20 years ago, and something like a 270HP Camry is getting a little ridiclous.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Feds to increase car CAFE.
A brand new Ethanol refinery has broken ground in southern Arizona. It is not owned by big oil, in any way, shape, or form. It is a private consortium of investors.
They also want to build a new oil refinery in the same general area. They are running into problems with that one though.............. as the 10 people who live within 10 miles of the proposed site are fighting it, and do not want it that close to their $50 per acre property (as it would probably reduce property values).
