Boss Mustang incoming.
Re: Boss Mustang incoming.
So, it might me a N/A 5.4L engine?
This leads to the question, how much longer will the 4.6L be in production. I know that they just came out with the 3V, but the 4.6 has been around a while.

Re: Boss Mustang incoming.
Personally I like the Mach, but I'd settle for a boss. I wonder what the head gear will be? Supposedly the Ford GT/Shelby 4v heads are mighty fine, but I prefer the knuckle-dragging 3v heads myself. In a GT sorta tune a 5.4 3v would knock down 350hp with the peanut butter burning ignition timing Ford uses on the 4.6 . In a premium fuel tune, it'd probably knock down 360 to 370hp. VVT would give it a nice broad powerband, but to get some extra ummphhh... they'd need a bit more radical lobe on the cams (doubt we'd see that, but you never know?)

here is a link comparing various cylinderheads, sift through and you will see the flow figures for the 3v heads.

But then again, I'm not counting that other RWD coupe Ford has coming.

Re: Boss Mustang incoming.
I think the upgrade that the 4.6 recieved in 05' for the Mustang is comparable from going from the LS1 to the LS2. The LS V8 recieved a bump in displacement while the 4.6 recieved 3v heads.
I do think Ford is going to have to do something more drastic with the 4.6 (or replace it) if they want to stay competitive. 300 HP in a performance V8 is not great and when the Camaro comes out, that will be all too clear.

In retrospect, the windsor motors lasted from about 1960's-ish (first windsor V8 was a whopping 221 CID) to 1995 IIRC. GM's own SBC lasted from 1950's-ish till the LS1 came out, however the basic architecture (OHV V8) is still with us.
The mod motors aren't to bad, they were just designed to be a "jack of all trades" and is typical of such an arragement, master of none.
That said, at least they continue to refine the motor, rather than frivolously try and reivent the wheel every year with yet another brand new engine design.
