You know, at this rate, maybe there won't even be a Cobra. It has been pushed back and the rumored power figures have been scaled back just like the Lightning. Maybe it is right that the development costs are too large and the profits too slim to suppoort these vehicles. This is very bad for Ford performance.

This whole SVT cancellation thing seems to be Ford learning from GM rather than the other way around.

I don't get it. Ford has all this money to dump into the development of a $150,000 GT40 and build a few hundred a year. Now instead of losing money on a cool car that only a few hundred can afford, they could have invested all that capital into the new Lighting and Cobra, and the next SVT Focus. I am convinced that there is a profit to be made on these niche vechiles. I'm sure the beancounters could lecture me on that they can make a lot more profit on bland 500's, F150's, and Mustangs(though I wouldn't call the GT bland)

Al, please keep it civil. Also, please do not be the cause of him not reading relevant e-mails. I'm sure you have alot of pent up anger at him.......... but can it wait for a while longer???
Perhaps you should've let the email out. It's too easy and he might end up receiving a lot of nonsense.

Leaving fax # would be good - it takes some time and effort to send, so only constructive feedback will get through.

The problem being that not all have easy access to a fax.

Frankly, the fax and snail mail really are the best as they produce the best hard copy. E-mail is good, but does require some effort on the recipients part to print.

If Al wishes to be an a*s, there really is nothing that we can do about it. However, I would venture to guess that at this point, anything that does not refer to the problem at hand, or other important issues would pretty much be ignored.

Frankly, I'm exhausted. I have been working on this for 2 days.......... and pretty much nothing else. I think I will take the evening off, drink a couple of drinks, have some great steak with my husband and son (my husband does the best BBQ ever), and then have some great sex. LOL

This sucks. I can't see them cancelling the cobra... A large part of the Mustangs survivability is the constant supply of SEs and doesen't that come out of SVT?

But you'll be able to buy the exciting Lincoln 6, uh, I mean, Lincoln Zephyr! 3.0l V6 and a 6-speed automatic from Aisin.

How about a new motto for Ford: mainstream cars for mainstream people.

1. I think that the fate of SVT will have very little effect on the prospects of Ford as whole.

2. If the "limited production" SVT franchise is the reason why the 2005 Mustang GT ended up as a relatively "tame pony," then taking SVT out of the picture might be a good thing for performance enthusiasts.

3. Assuming that the successor to the SVT Cobra is a better engineered, non-limited edition, cheaper, more widely distributed, production line Mustang, wouldn't the consumer benefit from the passing of SVT?

so you're saying that ford should just build a top of the line killer stang in-house, instead of using svt as some limited availablity badge car? it could work

Look at the debacle that happened in '99 when team Mustang took over the Cobra for a year.....

From Autoweek:

Lightning Struck: Ford decides to shelve SVT Lightning pickup
STEVEN COLE SMITH
Posted Date: 10/20/04
Ford has pulled the plug on the next-generation F-150 Lightning SVT pickup truck, instead putting all SVT's eggs into one basket - the SVT Cobra Mustang, due in 2006 as an '07 model.

"It's a business decision," said Alan Hall, SVT spokesman. The official line is that the Lightning has been "postponed," and not killed, but if it is revived, it will be 2008 or later before we see one. SVT has gone from three vehicles in 2004 - the Lightning, the Cobra Mustang and the SVT Focus - to none in 2005.

Ford had already shown a concept version of the next-generation Lightning in 2003. The concept had a supercharged V-8 engine with more than 500 horsepower, in answer to the Dodge Ram SRT-10, which eclipsed the Lightning as the world's fastest production pickup in a test last winter. Ford was eager to regain the crown, but has decided to deed the performance pickup-truck market over to Dodge and its 500-horse SRT-10, and to a lesser extent, Chevrolet, though the heavy all-wheel-drive Silverado SS is not in the same category.

The Lightning debuted in 1993, with a 240-horsepower version of Ford's 5.8-liter V-8. Cobby and not that attractive, it was only a mild success, and was dropped in 1995. The F-150's redesign led to a handsome new Lightning for 1999, featuring a 360-horsepower supercharged 5.4-liter V-8. A handful of 2004 Lightnings, not much changed from that 1999 model except for a horsepower bump to 380, remain on dealer lots. Base price: $33,560.

Apparently, cost played a leading role in the decision, as the expense involved in developing and certifying a proper V8, and massaging the new-for-2004 F-150's chassis, was deemed prohibitive. Also, the next-generation Lightning's fuel mileage would likely continue to detract from Ford's Corporate Average Fuel Economy totals: The current Lightning is rated at 12 mpg city, 16 mpg highway.

Even so, this news will not be popular with Lightning loyalists, such as Mike Philpot of Heathrow, Florida, who paid full sticker price for his Lightning in July, 1999. "My '99 Lightning has been a fantastic vehicle," he says. "It has about 54,000 miles on it, and it runs better than new. Never any problems. I bought an extended warranty from Ford, but I could have saved myself the money. It has it all: good looks, comfort, good handling and, of course, all that incredible power. Hardly a day goes by without at least one positive comment on it from someone.

"Hopefully, Ford will change its mind. If they want to keep the F-150 the most popular truck in the world with all the competition that it has now, they had better continue with their halo vehicle."

Re: Bombard Ford SVT with faxes !!!!! re: Lightning

OH, this is too good.
Ford cares about enthuists eh? Shutting down SVT you say? IMO, a smart thing. There car line BLOWS. How about making a division for, oh lets say...style? Fire J.Mays and his super warm-overs of past designs.
Maybe Ford will take all this money from helping SVT and put it back into a better mid sized sedan. Maybe they will use it to bring a the new Mazda based Focus here? Maybe they could worry about the other 90% of the car buying public, and not about a few enthusiasts.

Keep the Faith...you Ford fan boys(and girls) laugh at us when we say that...now you are starting to understand what it feels to acutaly belive in it.

As far as keep the faith...I have faith that Ford will wake up, and start making real cars.

That's precisely what I'm saying. For instance, why should a MG (yes, a British car) be the first to use the highly developed 5.0 "Cammer." SVT was holding the Mustang back. Good riddens.
