BMW's 1-series: REAL Spy Pics of the Coupe, Convertible, Sedan, Wagon and 3-door!

We should all know by now that the BMW 1-series is currently sold in Europe only as a 5-door - for the moment. Despite the weak dollar/strong Euro and very limited production capacity, the 1-series will be coming to the USA with the 330i's upcoming 255 horsepower 6-cylinder with a rumored 300hp+ (turbo?/supercharged?) 3.0 liter coming later on.

Here are the other 5 (FIVE!) body styles of what is rumored to become a 7-8 variant model range. There's still firm info about a possible "smaller-than-Z4" roadster or entry level X1 crossover SUV.

1-series 3-door:

The three-door looks rather, um, "Focus-esque."

The convertible and coupe aren't bad, though. Do we know the price range?

Cool, but not right for the BMW image.

This would be the perfect entry level car for Ponitac. Kappa Sedan, Coupe and wagon could replace the Vibe and Sunfire.

Don't worry, I doubt that North America will get the 3 and 5-door body styles. Actually, I have doubts that BMW will import a 1-series wagon after the poor sales performance of the current 3-series wagon and the last generation 5-series wagon. Still, Europeans will ****** up every hatchback version they can get their hands on and Europe also loves station wagons.

Don't ask why, please.

The weak U.S. dollar is making the answer to that question very uncertain. However, I can state that BMW is going to concentrate on higher profit margin versions of the 1-series for the U.S. market. That means you can forget about a $19,995 MSRP BMW 120i.

My best guess is that the upcoming BMW 130i could match the price of today's BMW 325i. Remember, the E90 3-series is getting bigger and the 1-series is based on the same platform - but gets 4-inches chopped out of its wheelbase. Smaller=cheaper. Smaller also equals rear seat space that's closer to the early 1990s E36 3-series (or even the '80s E30) than the current E46 or upcoming E90 3-series.

I'll translate for people that don't understand BMW body codes: the 1-series won't have very much rear legroom.

I just think BMW better be damn cautious about how they launch it here... The absence of a loss-leader, sub-$20k version may well spell doom for it in this market, where luxury subcompacts arent generally accepted, as they are in europe.

Why is there black electrical tape holding the ground effects kit on it on the car in the last pics?

They'll charge 30-35K for them. In this day and age, its hard to get into a 3 series for under 35K. Now will they sell? I don't know anything about sales numbers for the new Bangle style BMW's and if they have been well recieved. I do know that I hardly ever see a 7 series, have seen one 6 series, and have seen 1 5 series around where I live(there are lots of rich people, and BMW's are pretty common).

I generally find BMWs to be aesthetically pleasing. This car is an exception. Those grounds effects look like they are too "big" too mea - kind of like when someone goes overboard with plastic surgery and things end up worse than they started.

1-series= gimpy Eurotrash econoboxes
3-series= oversized, overrated, overhyped (maybe an exception for the M3, but I'd still rather have a Vette)
5-series= ugly, pointless, overpriced
7-series= iDrive, enough said
Z= styling disaster

Only good cars in the entire lineup are the 6-series and the X5.

And we thought GM was in trouble?

Re: BMW's 1-series: REAL Spy Pics of the Coupe, Convertible, Sedan, Wagon and 3-door!

I thought they had one of the most perfect lineups until they hired that Bangle guy to style their cars. All of his designs are horrendous and make me want to gouge my eyes out after looking at them. They are almost as bad as the Aztek.

Then their recent affiliation with electronic gizmos that get between the driver and the car(iDrive, Active Ratio steering, etc.) has really turned me away from ever owning a new one(of course I don't think I'd ever run into that much $$$).

Prediction: The current 3 series, M3, last gen M5, 7 series, 5 series, and X5 will be highly sought after collector cars in 20 to 30 years.

You aren't seeing "ground effects," just a very deep sill beneath the doors. Why does the sill look so deep? Well, that's traditionally been a BMW design element, although the 1-series is getting an unusual "kink" around the door bottoms.
