Big 2.5 chiefs to meet with President

A second person familiar with preparations for the meeting said it would be held on May 18 and would focus on alternative fuels, including ethanol, the high pension and health-care costs borne by the Detroit automakers and their concern on foreign exchange rates.

I personally think the government should financially back the big 2.5 (or maybe just the big 2, leave the half german company out of it) in the field of alternative fuel research and implementation. It would be of great benefit to our government and economy to, as a country, finally be disconnected from the middle eastern tit of oil supply.

We are more or less their bitches until we can do that.

Yeah, if I was president I might kick out the DCX and only meet with the Big 2.

He said it wasn't the government's job to dig the big two out of the financial and reputation hole that they'd dug themselves into.

But he didn't (IIRC) say anything about alternative fuel research.

It'd look especially bad for him if he said he didn't care about working with them on alternative fuel research considering his strong ties to the oil industry, war in the middle east, and the fact that everyone is pissed about gas prices these days.

Wasn't this tried in the '90s? I seem to recall some collaborative effort to produce a high mpg vehicle, something like the GM Ultralight concept.

Maybe now this initiaive will have a greater sense of importance.
