Best-selling vehicle in May 2008: NOT the F-series!

Wow, didn't see this coming:

Ford F series loses title as top-selling vehicle in May

The Ford F-150 pickup truck has been dethroned as America's favorite vehicle for the first time since 1991 -- by two Toyota sedans.

According to preliminary sales figures released by automakers, Ford Motor Co. sold 42,973 F-series trucks in May, while Toyota Motor Corp. sold 52,826 Corollas and 51,291 Camrys.

The last time a car outsold the F series was October 1991.

Jim Farley, Ford group vice president for marketing and communications, said the F series' loss to Toyota's cars was a "significant development."

"But it's not surprising, given the fuel price," Farley said. "That's just a sign of the times. I think May has been a watershed month."

Toyota said Corolla sales rose 12.4 percent in May, but were down 9.5 percent for the first five months compared with the same period a year ago. Camry sales have been flat.
The equivalent monthly sales rate is barely half of what it was just three years ago

I can't say I am really surprised. No one wants to buy a truck unless they really need the utility on a daily basis. I myself was considering a Silverado/Sierra to replace my mercury because there are times where I could really use a truck. But because of gas prices, I am now considering a 3-door Astra or a used focus hatchback.

I can't read the article, is that from OPs article or another source? I guess it shouldn't be a surprise that the Toyota-loving press left that out of the headline.

The CIVIC was the BEST SELLING VEHICLE in the US last month!!!

n fact, after 17 years worth of being this country's best-selling vehicle, the Ford F-150 full-size pickup (42,973) has fallen for the first time to fourth place behind the Toyota Camry (51,291), Corolla (52,826) and your new best-selling vehicle in the U.S., the Honda Civic (53,299).

I am curious, is that the first time ever a foreign name plate was the best selling vehicle in the US?

Anyone know were we can get a list of sales by all makes in order? I'd like to see this new top ten list.

Interesting to go look at the numbers of what actually sold.

Only 1091 Astras were sold in May. 1510 Escalades were sold in May. WTF!!!

I guess it goes to show you that what is popular on the internet (car enthusiast forums) isn't necessarily popular to the average car buyer.

The Toyota Camry became the best selling passenger car in the US for the first time in 1997. Since then, it has been at the top or near the top in passenger cars year after year. I can't find any records to support it, but this may be the first time that a foreign name plate has held the title of best selling overall.

I don't think this is surprising. I drove in my friend's brand new civic SI the other day...I was quite impressed with the quality and the thing was pretty quick considering (and he averages nearly 30mpg).

Compared to the Cobalt (a guy at work has one) the Civic feels liek a cadillac.
