I don't know if I'd go that far, but I pretty much agree. Cobalt was strong competition for the last generation of Civic, but the new 06+ Civic really does feel a generation ahead. Chevrolet's goal with the next Cobalt need to be to leap frog the current generation of Civic.

The car that beat the F-Series in 1991 was the Honda Accord.

I've basically said the same thing in another thread.

GM are not good at making small cars. The trend is worrying for GM. As a GM loyalist, I am worried.

Actually it's not. It's a simile.

That always seems to be the trend, unfortunately. When GM comes out with a competitor to the established Japanese offerings, the GM vehicle comes up short and a full generation behind when the new Japanese cars lob, usually only 1-2 years later.

GM need to get funky. Signs are there but there needs to be an onslaught of style and quality built into the cheaper cars. Leather steering wheels & gear *****, bright electroluminescent instrumentation that's easy to read, lots of storage compartments, high quality plastics and high tech, fuel efficient engines that are among the best in class will go some way towards showing GM haven't forgotten to build cars that truly rival the best of Japan

God I pray for the day when GM sell car lines in the vacinity of 50-60K/month. They can't even achieve that with clones from Chev, Buick and Pontiac! Time to make constructive changes GM!!!

Yeah, it's really sad--and worrying--that GM has all the pieces to do some truly stunning small cars, but it can't seem to get its act together to *do it.*

I mean, yeah. On the domestic side, we have great engines, up to and including the LNF turbo. And we *know* GM can do world-class interiors with superb detailing, like they do on the CTS.

On the world side, there's the Astra, the Corsa, hell, even the Tigra.

The problem is, a premium Cobalt needs to be here *now.* The Corsa needs to be here *now.* The Beat needs to be here *now.* Because people are making their decisions for new cars *now*, and GM is losing customers, yet again.

Just as an FYI:

F-series trucks have also been the best-selling vehicles each month since June 2005, when the Chevrolet Silverado pickup took a brief lead, said Tom Libby, senior director of industry analysis for the Power Information Network, a division of J.D. Power. The last time a car topped the monthly sales charts was the Ford Taurus sedan in December 1992, according to Ford's top U.S. sales analyst George Pipas.

i didnt think the civic was all that great my self i mean yah it did have better have a little bit better fit and finish. but i didn't like the body styling and the dash was weired as well i personally wasn't fanatical about it i think although the cobalt lacks the fit and finish the lay out for the car is better more ergonomic. i think if the fit an finish of the cobalt were better then most people would think the cobalt was a better car.

the thing that got me when i was looking was the civic comparatively equipped was more money a good chunk more. gm also had a better warranty. i had a honda a long time ago and liked it thats why i though i would look at both the cobalt and the civic and the cobalt was just what i was looking for. when you buy a cheap beater car for mpg fit and finish arnt the most concerning part of the car.

i wonder how gm cars would land if they werent split up i mean the sliverado and sierra are the same exact truck same as the cobalt and g5

Another board I frequent had an article saying Civic was the best selling vehicle... though Corolla and Camry had also surpassed F150.

Toyota includes Solara in it's camry sales, although I think the Solara is being axed this year?

Toyota also includes the sales of the Matrix in it's corolla figures... sooo, it's kinda funny the civic still beats it

I really liked the styling of the last gen civics, but I can't get over how goofy the latest gen looks

I suspect that someone is fudging numbers by including/excluding rental/fleet sales, or something along those lines. No big deal.

I think the press just ran with the story before Honda's numbers were in.

It appears that Automotive News ran the article before Honda released its sales numbers.

What AN is saying today is that the Civic was indeed the best-selling car last month. The Accord also ended up beating the F-150 in monthly sales.

The fact that these particular four sedans are doing so well (especially with the Corolla getting such ****-poor reviews) has to be a major concern for the Detroit automakers. It's not an issue of price, it's not an issue of getting good press (both the Fusion and Malibu have received glowing reviews in virtually every major publication)... clearly, something's missing, and it's gotta be found before both automakers find themselves in bankruptcy court

Corolla's reviews have not been **** poor if you read them and really take their primary critiques with a grain of salt from the consumer's perspective. They say it is 'boring'. Well... tell me how much 'boring' matters to most of the people buying this kind of car in the first place.

Comfortable, reliable, practical, and economical make up the top 4 priorities for most of these consumers. The ones that care more about an exciting drive will probably go with a Civic, not a Cobalt.
