and they have sold 1 million of them. I feel like GM is missing out. At least Ford has a full hybrid Fusion coming out this fall. A BAS hybrid Cobalt pair with the 1.8L would probably break 32/40mpg and cost under $20,000. I hope a 2 mode+ small 4cyl. is planned for the next Astra or Cobalt. GM needs a car that can get 40mpg+ ASAP.

Looks like the Volt will do just that. Will be around in 2010-2011. And will get some pretty impressive mileage out of it, too. I'm just curious on what the price will be.

I'll be extremely surprised if the Volt came in at $25K. Even if the Volt is $30K, GM still needs to do a 40mpg hybrid at around the Civic/Prius base price ($21K-$22K)

Imagine that, a car company producing what the consumer wants. Its no wonder Toyota is number 1 worldwide. Average price of a Prius is up $869 over year ago price according to J.D. Power & Associates. Toyota cut the value of its sales promotions to $123 per vehicle in April 08, from $1471 in March 07. Prius deliveries are up 23% in 2008, to 64,664 vehicles. US dealers had a 7 day supply as of April 30.

So how about those tundra numbers?

Its nice to see the Prius doing well but it barely turns a profit. Its does give the company lots of goodwill. So even though Prius sales are up we all have seen the headlines that profits are down. I will be interested to see what GM's profits will be as they give hybrids a run. There is still the "what if" factor for both if oil and gas take a big drop. Lots of oil experts see oil at $80 a barrel at the end of 2008. If gas goes down to $2.25-$2.50 a gallon are we really going to go out and drop $26K on a econobox with a 8 year battery.

I have a feeling the 2 mode system will make its ways to the Epsilon cars fairly soon and that GM is at least working on a 2 mode Ecotec combo for Delta cars.

Keep in mind the Prius is a lot... and I mean a lot smaller than the Volt will be. The Volt is about the size of a Malibu. The Prius is more about the size of a Aveo. That said, my wife's bf has a Prius and loves it. I've ridden around in it with her. For where she lives and her commute, its practical. (Although only about 1/2 her commute is in electric mode.) But on the freeway, that thing scares me.

How big is the Volt going to be?

The Prius is significantly bigger than the Aveo... especially on the inside.

It's classified by the EPA as a mid sized car.

There'll also be an all new one out by the time the Volt is out.

The Prius is way bigger than an Aveo, and while the Volt may end up physically larger on the outside, the concept was the same or smaller on the inside, to my eye. The Prius has clown-car proportions on the inside- it's freakishly roomy considering the total size of the vehicle.

No so sure about that.

Apparently the Volt will be based to some degree on the Delta platform along with the next gen Cobalt.

The Prius is about 170" long, about 2" shorter than a Cobalt.

Aveo is 152"... roughly 5" longer than a Mini.

Malibu is about 188" long. Roughly 5" shorter than a CTS.

A Prius is a good size car once you get in it, lots of room in front and back. the main problem with the Prius isn't the car itself it's the holier than thou idiots that buy them only to make a political statement.

GM lost $3.3 billion in 1Q08 and Toyotas profit in the same period was down 28%, but not in the red.

See I have this theory. It's called GM and other manufactors are always behind the curve and by the time they get anything to market it's peak appeal has passed.
SO I figured by 2011 or whenever this stuff shows up all over the place gas prices will be back down. Either because all the tree huggers will own high mpg cars thus making gas cheap for the rest of us or the future traders will move on or whatever else.
Anyway that's my hope, don't take it away from me.
If gas prices continue to go up by then I swear I'll nuke us all!
