You have a Nissan, right? Look at Frontier. It has I4 that producing tire-shredding 143 HP and V6 with earth shattering 180 HP. A far cry from GM's offerings.
Toyota Tacoma also offers two choices. It has I4 with 167 HP. Again, short of Canyon/Colorado. However, it does shine with its V6, which makes 245 HP.
Dakota has moved up in size, I don't consider it to be in the same league anymore. It actually weighs 1000 lbs more than Canyon/Colorado, or Frontier, or Tacoma in comparable configurations. Still, they offer V6 as the BASE motor making 210 HP, and V8 with 230/260 HP. The 1000 lbs of extra weight Dakota packs means that it will need that V8.
So does ALL competition beat GM in Horespower? Hardly. GM's 4-cylinder beats every other 4-cylinder offered in trucks, and its I5 is able to beat MOST other V6s offered by competition.

WRONG, the new nissan V6 is going to have even more power then the toyotas 245 hp... I think around 260. And toyota will be coming out with a supercharged version of there 245hp engine doing close to 300hp.
The ranger's V6 is only 13hp behind the colorado\canyon and features a bit more TQ.
The I5 is leading no one in power.... it is about to eat everyone elses dust.

The Nissan Frontier specs you gave were from ancient 2004.For 2005 the Frontier offers a class leading 270hp 4.0 liter VQ-series V6 - not to mention having 65+ lb/ft more torque than GM's puny inline-5. The base motor is a smooth VR-series 2.5 liter with power and torque rating that nearly match GM's tractor-sized 2.8 liter unit. It goes to show that the Vortec Inline family engines, being unfit for passenger car duty and weak for truck motors, were a waste of development money for GM.
The fact of the matter is that GM's 5-cylinder is positively feeble compared to the new 4.0 liter Nissan and Toyota V6 engines.
Re: The Autoextremist on slow selling SSR.
Would the 275 HP I-6 from a Trailblazer fit in a Colorado or Canyon? What GM should have done is never designed the four banger and made the I-5 standard while the I-6 is the option. Or maybe they could fit the 4.8 V8 under the hood? Or why not just throw in the 5.3 V8 while you are at it?
Just a funny thing, I was looking up specs on GMC's website and found out that the 4.8 V8 gets better gas mileage than the 4.3 V6 and has 90 more horsepower with 35 more lb ft of torque.
I almost fell out of my seat laughing.

Well, the only thing Nissan.ca has is supercharged 3.3L 210 HP which I missed originally. It doesn't have any info on the upcoming engine, perhaps nissan usa has the info.

Plus with 60 more HP, alot less weight, and more utility it is an easier sell than the SSR. The GTO has proven itself, and read the Automotive Press reviews... the automotive press liked the car, as have the people that have bought one. There WERE some issues with selling the GTO, I agree. Its hard to sell a car like that when you let people know 1/2 the way through the year your going to bump the power 50 HP if they can hold out 3 ~ 4 months, with the gouging taking place, and lastly I don't recall alot of GM promoting the car.
I think now with gouging stopped, and incentives the cars are making there way off the lot, and into people's garages. The GTO is a REAL competitor to the low ~ mid range Mercedez and BMW offerings, and the M3. I think where the GTO falls short of the BMW & Mercedez is the "Little Attention to details", but at 10 ~ 30 Grand less, for a car with some real *****... I'm not going to sweat the little stuff. You can keep your heated seats, air circulation system, etc... I couldn't own the average German car for $289 per month like I did with the GTO, plus it wouldn't offer the SOTP smile I get in the Goat

Even their supercharged V6 offers 10 less HP than colorado's I5.
The 2005 Frontier's 4.0 liter V6 (shared with the current 2005 Pathfinder and upcoming new Xterra) bests GM's by a margin of 45hp and 65lb/ft.
