Article from 'Hemmings Muscle Machines'
Ok So I just came home from eating out and on my desk is a copy of May 2004 Hemmings Muscle Machines in the Production Line section on page 8 there is an article in the lower lefthand corner that is titled Gone, But Never Forgotten It goes like this: "Speculation that GM might resurrect the pontaic firebird and cheverolet camaro was assentually put to rest by GM vice chairman, Bob Lutz, a few weeks ago. In a short, direct piece in the February 9th automotive news, Lutz put the kibosh on a new GM rear drive sport coupe with either of those names.
But it's not for technical reasons or any lack of will on the part of GM. It's part of a deal with the Canadian Auto Workers Union. According to the article, "During negotiations to close the STE. therese, Quebec, plant that made the rear hyphon drive sports coupes, GM pledged to the Canadian auto workers that it would not make [Camaros and Firebirds] elsewhere. Lutz says reviving the pony cars would be an appealing notion. But, he adds, "A deal's a deal."
