Anticipating Corvette "Blue Devil," Viper ups HP to 600

It would be nice if Ford had another car to replace the GT.
I think they are going to give it more power after they do the remake here in a couple years. I heard that Mclaren is helping the Dodge team find more power for this engine.
BTW, how does the exhaust have VVT but no the intake? Anyone want to take a stab at that?

Word from inside SRT is that there's a lot more in the can for if and when. 600 is enough FOR NOW, and will theoretically give Viper a solid edge over the Z06 on the track and in buff-book performance tests. We'll see about next year once it comes.
I really wish they could do something about that interior, though. Fifteen years on and it still looks like a cheapass kit car inside.
FYI there's an all new platform (ZC) for Viper in the works. MY10, going into production 1/09, if the schedule holds.

Oh, yeah. I had a '90 ZR-1 (375 hp) for a while and it was pretty much the fastest thing on the road at the time, aside from an F40 or a Viper (or a bike). It was certainly the fastest road car among my group of car-mad friends -- and some of the guys I hung out with back then (mid '90s) had some serious iron (third-gen RX7s, a Testarossa, modded Z28s, an M5, etc.)
0-60 in 4.5 was jaw-droppingly fast as recently as ten years ago, now it's just quick.

At least this horsepower (like the Z06 and the upcoming "Blue Devil") is in a car that's going to be sold in low numbers and will stay fairly expensive.
If it was a regular car that's going to depriciate to where a young driver with alot less respect for the power might afford it in a few years, I'd be alarmed.

Gotta love competition.
The blue devil should still theoretically spank it, though. Isn't it going to be 650hp and even lighter than the Z06, which is already spanking the current viper quite handily?
Though I suppose this time around the Viper guys might be able to use the 'bargain' factor for their argument since the Viper is "only" 83-85k or so and the BD is, I think, going to be ~100k.

My sentiments exactly. Unless the new Viper weighs 2900, the blue devil will kill it.
I'm a Chevy/GM guy for sure, but the Viper is just freakin' sexy. The new hood is a little odd (will have to take a look in person if I make it to NAIAS), but overall, that body is a-rockin'. And now with 600hp...
Definitely more of a kit/track car than an do-it-all wondercar like the Z06, of course. Take a look at the dash. I love the guage layout (though I absolutely adore the guage clusters in the C5 and C6); overall definitely an all business interior. This is also evident in the stereo that looks like it came from a 1997 Dodge Caravan...
But still, and I've said this before, if I were asked to pick based SOLELY on styling, I'd take a Viper SRT10 or GTS coupe over a Z06. When you factor in the overall driving experience, the comfort factor, the interior, the performance, the 7000 rpm small block with a voice like a choir of angels, and the value for the dollar, the Z06 emerges on top rather easily. But on styling alone, I have to give the edge to the Viper (which is not to say the Z06 isn't sexy as hell...). The other cool thing is that with the Viper, you get the same 510hp (or 600 hp, now, Jeez that is huge *** number
) in a coupe or a droptop, which you can't do with the Z06, unless you go aftermarket. Which, of course, you could probably do for similar money as a Viper, but we're talking from the factory here...

Phase 1) Buy one Corvette Z51 Convertible
Phase 2) Remove LS2 and install LS7 (w/ cam and headers)
Phase 3) \ o /
Phase 4) Profit.

That was what I was expecting to see when I first read that, but then it stopped. I was like, ok GM did a good job of coming up with something to give a pushrod engine VVT, but Dodge just figured out something that GM couldn't.....individual valve timing on a pushrod engine.
So, apparently the new 600hp Viper motor is LEV compliant!
So not only does you Honda meet LEV, so does the 600hp Viper. Someone needs to tell Honda their doing it wrong.:lol Also, that twin throttle body setup is sexy.
There is also a rumor that this Viper is suppose to lose 200lbs over the current one. Time will tell...

When SRT powertrain engineers set out to get more venom from the 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10's powerplant, their objectives included not only increasing performance, but also complying with stringent regulatory requirements, such as federal Tier 2, Bin 5 and California's Low Emissions Vehicle (LEV) 2 mandates.
