ANOTHER Zeta variant???

from The Car Connection:
General Motors' further global integration could include a new entry-level vehicle for Europe - built in Europe by Saab. The Financial Times reports that Cadillac is considering a plan to build a car off the architecture that has spawned the Saab 9-3, and is also considering the possibility of building the vehicle at Saab's underutilized plant in Sweden. A decision could come in a few months, the paper says. Meanwhile, the FT also says Saab is studying a new lineup-topping model called the 9-6 to be derived from the new GM rear-/all-wheel-drive architecture. That vehicle would be shared with Opel in Europe and would be based on a design from GM's Aussie Holden brand. Saab is introducing the 9-2X, spun from the Subaru WRX, and the 9-7X, derived from the Chevy TrailBlazer platform, this year.

Looks like GM is looking at having a lot of vehicles run off Zeta... which would spread costs out quite a bit!

I think Zeta is the "VE lite" platform, hence the name "Velite" use don the Buick show car that is coming up...

I get a little confused on some of this stuff... there seems to be a lot of "grey area" as to what is what on Sigma/Sigma Lite VE/VELite/Zeta....

Maybe Guion or someone can further define the differences for us?

Zeta is the structure.

VE is Holden's version of it.

Here in the US, GM will use a letter of the alphabet to designate our version of Zeta.

Return of the "B" body, perhaps?

If this is the case, I assume it spreads across all structures?

For example... GMX-001 (Cobalt) is on the Delta structure, but so is Saturn Ion (not sure of GMX-### of Ion)

How are Cobalt and Ion differentiate code-wise being that they are both Delta cars? And is the single letter used part of the VIN# liek the "F" in the F-Bodies, and the "Y" in Corvettes are?

Maybe we can define the hierarcy from structure to vehicle?

Delta --> "VE" type deisngation for divisions?? --> GMX-### code --> Body letter ?

Or is it different?

And why have a GMX-### / GMT-### code AND a body letter, unless the body letter is just for VIN coding?

That's a good question. Is the Cobalt's code "J"? I would imagine they would try to get away from that.

Cavalier (and Sunfire I thought as well (Sunbird prior)) were body J-Cars... not sure what Cobalt's designation is....

Of course, If Cavalier AND Sunfire were both "J" bodies, like Camaro AND Firebird were both "F" bodies... I assume it is OK to use the same letter if it is differentiated by the Manufacturer's Division code which is also in the VIN #...???

But I agree with you, you'd like to see them use another letter for te new Cobalt to distance it from Cavalier.

Not 100% sure, but I think Colbalt will have a different designation since the J-body will continue (Sunfire) after Colbalt comes out.

I think this is a good move for Saab. I could see an AWD zeta based Saab competing against the VW Phaeton.

As a follow-up, according to GM documents, the Cobalt and Pursuit have a body code of "A".
